For the slaves, family members were often separated due to being sold by the owners. The owners only let them keep their families when they are disabled and can’t sell for any price. In the book Kindred, a woman slave named Sarah was able to keep her daughter only because the daughter was a mute. Of course, the Camp 14 didn’t let prisoner stay with their families, either. The fathers and mothers were also separated. But they had one condition which is that if they worked harder, they will let them live with their families. But it’s clear that it’s just a way to make them to work. The ideas didn’t seem to work either since the prisoners didn’t really know what family was. In the video, Shin said that his mother and brother were killed because they tried to escape. He also admitted that it was himself that reported to the officers because he wanted credit from them. But the difference is that if a child was given birth by a slave, the child is a slave. Certainly, the same goes for free blacks. If it’s a child from a free black, then the child is also a free. But in Camp 14’s case, they are to be imprisoned three generations. Because they think the family might also think the same. The idea is to eliminate any thoughts of going against the government. As for the example, Shin got tortured when the officers found out about the escape plan. It was clear that Shin did not take part in the plan but they did it in order to make Shin forget about the idea of escaping. As for the punishments, both slaves and the prisoners are only punished to keep them in line. Most of the punishments are physical including being amputated body parts. For the slaves, if they defy the owners or try to run away, they will be beaten and often sold to the deeper south which conditions are harsher for slaves. In the book, a slave named Isaac tried to run away with his free wife, Alice. But they were caught later and he was sold to other white slave owner and Alice also become a slave. But for the Camp 14, there are no chances. If one tried to escape, they will be shot where they were found. According to the video, there is no Camp 14’s prisoner who escaped and talk about it except
