The Battle of The Bone Rivalry
This past week the biggest rivalry football game of the year was played in Chino Hills. The game was between the Chino Hills Huskies and the Chino Hills Bulldogs; this is a rivalry that has been going on since the start of the schools. The nickname that was given to the big game was the “ Battle of the Bone.” This rivalry is a center piece to both schools, even after Chino Hills High School moved to a new sport division and could not compete against the Bulldogs in the actual football season; many people thought the rivalry would be dead. Likely the teams found a way to make the rivalry continue after the division changes. Both high schools decided to make an agreement to play the game unofficially in the preseason.

The president of the UA system, Donald Bobbitt, and Chancellor Joe Steinmetz, who opened Thursday's meeting supporting the expansion, were apparently 100 percent on board. Their titles are above that of athletic director. On August 26th, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Green Bay Packers for a preseason exhibition game. Normally, there is little attention given to these games because they are played with the sole purpose of evaluating the progress of players before the regular season begins. This game, however, ended up receiving worldwide attention for something that happened before the game had even started. Colin Kaepernick, the current backup-QB for the 49ers, made headlines by choosing not to stand during the playing of the national anthem of the United States. Kaepernick justified his actions by saying that he doesn’t support the nation’s recent acts of police brutality as well as the unequal treatment of minorities.…

In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and singing the lyrics a UNC student wrote over 100 years ago in 1897. As the “Go Tar Heels!” exhibit exemplifies with this piece, a game is about more than the athletes.…

Beginning in 1893, The Iron Bowl has been referred to as the biggest sports rivalry nationwide. In the film Roll Tide War Eagle, Cam Newton, former Auburn quarterback, states, “You either have to be crimson or orange and blue.” Greg McElroy, former Alabama quarterback, adds, “And if you don’t pick either one then they both hate you” (Roll Tide War Eagle). Throw Me A Bone And I’ll Succeed “To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone” (McEntire). You of course need bones to live effectively let alone be successful, but I believe McEntire is referring to these bones figuratively. We need a wishbone to wish and be hopeful in all things, as well as always having something to always work for. I believe also that we need a backbone, figuratively speaking, because we need to be able to stand up for what we believe.…
