Relationships In The Novel Waterlily

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life,” (Bach). Family is not always the people who are your blood relatives, rather, it is the people you love and care for you. Waterlily is about a young woman whose father left her mother a few months after her birth. When Waterlily’s mother gets remarried, her step-father takes care of her and loves her very much, even though he is not biologically related to her. The concept of kinship that is found in the novel Waterlily has also been witnessed in three ways during the everyday lives of people all around the world: family is not always blood related, no type of family is normal, and every family has problems. In the book, Waterlily’s father abandoned her and her mother, Blue Bird, when she was very young. “Naturally, Blue Bird was hurt by that undeserved public insult,” (Deloria 16). Blue Bird’s husband publicly divorced her, which is a great dishonor, but she was more worried about her baby. Star Elk, Blue Bird’s first husband, is Waterlily’s father, but he is not her family. He is not her family because he does not care for her and love her. Blue Bird’s second husband, Rainbow, loves Waterlily very much. “But to the adults who understood the significance it was very important, for Rainbow was saying he would arrange and pay for a hunka ceremony for Waterlily,” (Deloria 73). Family what each person makes it. But the important thing is that there is love through all the hardships and abnormalities. Everyone should remember to tell their family they love them as often as they can, even if they are linked by joy, rather than blood. No one ever knows when you will not see them
