In document 3, Yoshitak Horie says that for every 1 Japanese soldier 10 American soldiers will be killed. Japanese soldiers were taught to never give up and when present on the battlefield to devote their body and soul for victory or honorable death. This statement shows that Japan will not surrender gracefully. To prove they dedicated themselves to their country, there was over 5,000 kamikazes (suicide planes) that destroyed ships and men (Document #4). In the battle of Okinawa facts shows that the Japanese did not surrender often and fought to the last man. Of the 110,000 soldiers only 10,000 were captured or wounded. There was also another deadly battle on Iwo Jima, an island that was five and a half miles by two and a half miles. In that battle 26,000 Americans were killed and wounded too Japan’s 19,000 killed and wounded. This gave a scare to American soldiers because what would it be like taking on Japan a much larger country. There were projections of what would happen if a war did take place on Japan and it was projected that in the first phase (Operation Olympic) 2 million Japanese people would die to 550,000 Americans killed and wounded. The Americans had an initial 650,000 troops for Operation Olympic, 9,000 aircraft, 9 battleships and 80 destroyers. While the Japanese had 2.3 million troops, 28 million local defense reserves and over 8,000 …show more content…
On July 25, 1945 Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin met at Potsdam. Here Truman and Churchill realized that Stalin wanted a lot Germany and Eastern Europe. Communist Russia also wanted Poland. As Stalin moved west to destroy Hitler he made those countries communist. This worried the west (USA & UK) because Russia was slowly growing in population and power (Document #9). In document 10 it shows the spread of Russia in Europe after World War two. They gained Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and many more. The soviet union was growing and spreading communism rapidly. In February 1945 Stalin agrees at the Yalta conference to help the Americans and British defeat the Japanese 3 months after the E.T.O. is over. The three months would start on May 8th and it would take three months because Stalin is 10,000 miles away in Germany. Stalin was set to attack on August 8th in Manchuria (Document #11). The first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6th, two days before Stalin was set to attack in Manchuria. The Americans were hoping that the dropping of the bomb would terrify the Japanese and force them to surrender because Americans did not want Stalin in Asia spreading communism. This plan failed though because the Japanese did not surrender or Stalin was scared off, but, it was worth it to try and

The decision to drop the bombs was not carried out by the decision of President Truman alone. When he succeeded the Presidency after Roosevelt died, he honestly insinuated to the press that he was not confident to take the highest position of the country. Much to his surprise presumably, when he was briefly informed about the Manhattan Project. Roosevelt did not share the secret project to Truman before he died. Nevertheless, Truman’s inexperience in foreign policy, urged him to seek advice from the members of the cabinet, luminaries, and selective leaders of the United States’ allies.…

He goes on (in document H) to say that since we had the technology we used it to decimate Japan and stop them from attacking the U.S, but is that all the bomb was used for?…

Truman saw that by ending this war, it would not only save American lives, but also Europeans, Indians, Koreans, Vietnamese, and Chinese lives. In fact, according to Newman’s essay Dropping the Bomb was Necessary and Justifiable “ Harry Truman ordered the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki primarily to end the war as soon as possible and save lives”(Newman,414). However, I believe it is important to understand that it was not just Truman’s decision to drop the bomb. In fact the Interim Committee was put together for the purpose of supporting Truman with making decisions regarding the atomic bomb. In a primary document of recommendation the Interim Committee suggests the combat use of the bomb against Japan.…

usage of the atomic bombs was militarily unnecessary and immoral. Furthermore, it lead to the extensive loss of civilian life, therefore making these bombings justifiable only to a lesser extent. However, supporters of the bombings generally are of the opinion that they were instrumental in the Japanese surrender. These supporters also believe that the bombings were beneficial in preventing casualties on both sides, and helped in protecting America from further attacks, especially by Japan. Even before the atomic bombs were dropped, Japan’s surrender was imminent (Source B, Extract 1).…

The use of the Atomic Bomb was both necessary and justified as it immediately ended World War II, solidified the United States as a superpower, and contained the germinating powers of Japan and Russia. The use of the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki immediately ended World War II and stopped the continuation of catastrophic and widespread violence in Japan. The Japanese had an audacious outlook on their offense throughout the duration of the war. It was suggested by Admiral William E. Leahy that, “The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender”(Source 2).…

The atomic bomb caused many Japanese lives; President Truman was not the one to blame because he warned General Marshall that we had the newest form of revolutionary that can cause many Japanese lives… and he still did not surrender. America was justified in the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan because it was a refutable gesture since the surprise attack on the Pearl Harbor which caused 2,403 American lives and destroyed eight of our battle ships. During WWII, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt approved the development of the atomic bomb, a project that became known as the Manhattan Project, out of fear that the Nazis would try to build and use a nuclear weapon. After FDR’s death, President Truman inherited the most powerful weapon in the history of mankind and was left with the choice of using it or not. Undoubtedly, his decision changed the world in so many ways, and is largely thought and taught that dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was necessary to end the Pacific War. Conversely, there were a number of alternatives the United States could have considered to avoid exposing our world to nuclear weapons while still triumphing in a Japanese agreement to an unconditional…
