1. Which group did you choose? Why did you pick that group? I chose the body-building subculture because of a few reasons. I believe there major reason why body-building stuck out was because there was a point in time where I could have been classified as an aspiring bodybuilder, I have since moved towards powerlifting. Although similar, powerlifting is a total different sport in its own values, athleticism, and most importantly, mentality. The main purpose of body-building is to develop and maximize muscle fiber size and strength through extreme exercises, high caloric diets, and motivation. The first is entertainment. Every year, millions of people tune in and watch the famed Mr. Olympia competition. Mr. Olympia is an international bodybuilding competition, held by the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness. The most recent competition, September 2015, netted Phil Heath, five time Mr. Olympia winner, $400,000 dollars in award money. The second relationship to general society is that of promoting health awareness. Although body-building is more inclined to extreme muscles and diets, the culture itself promotes health awareness and proper diets. That being said, there are a large number of people who continue to participate in bodybuilding throughout their lives. Notable examples would include, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Terry Cruz. Body-building as allowed these men to become more popular in the entertainment industries, and Arnold Schwarzenegger was even a California State Governor.
8. What about “wannabes”? What is the benefit of being a wannabe? How is their relationship with the larger society different from that of group members? The benefit of being a wannabe is that they believe they fit into the group and subculture without actually understanding or experiencing what it really is like. They believe they fit in easily but are often frowned upon by members of the group because wannabes’ bring the image and reputation of body-builders down. I believe wannabes everywhere are frowned upon equally in the body-building subculture and the general for trying too hard to fit in, that might be the case if they are trying to openly show off.
