The boarding house is one short story of the Dubliners collection, which was eventually published in 1914. In total there were 15 short stories, written by James Joyce. The stories are "epiphanies". A word used by Joyce to describe the sudden consciousness of the soul of something. A boarding house is a place where lodgers rent one or more rooms for one or more nights, and sometimes for longer periods. James Joyce writes in the stream of consciousness. This means that he writes down the thoughts of the characters. The use of this way of narrating is generally associated with short story writers of the 20th century. He was a very intelligent person. He had a passion for literature at an early age. Joyce attended the Irish school of Clongowes Wood College. Later, he went to University College Dublin. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on modern languages. His most known books are: Chamber music, Stephen Hero, Dubliners, Exiles and Ulysses. Mooney who opened a boarding house after her difficult marriage that ends in a separation. Her son, Jack and her daughter, Polly live with her in the boarding house. The house is filled with servants from the city, musicians and tourists. Mrs. Mooney is known by the lodgers as 'The Madam'. Polly stays at the house to amuse the lodgers and to help cleaning the house. Polly gets involved in a relationship with one of the lodgers, Mr. Doran. Her mother knows about the relationship and monitors the developments instead of sending her away. Mrs. Mooney waits until the right moment to meditate. Mrs. Mooney speaks with Polly and regulates a conversation with Mr. Doran on a Sunday morning. In the conversation Mrs. Mooney wants to convince Mr. Doran to offer his hand in marriage, because she wants to defend her daughter’s honour. Mrs. Mooney thinks that Mr. Doran will choose for his career. He can either marry Polly or run away. He convinces himself that he has been duped and wonders how he can be a free and unmarried man. Polly enters the room and threatens to end her life of unhappiness. Mr. Doran still wavers about his decision. Mr. Doran comforts Polly and goes to the meeting, leaving Polly to wait in the room. She was crying on her bed, dreaming of her possible future with Mr. Doran.
