This short story is about a man called “The Thinking Machine” and there was no problem he couldn’t solve. One day The Thinking Machine was challenged by Dr. Ransome that he could not escape a prison in seven days. The Thinking Machine, knowing he could prove Dr. Ransome wrong, accepted the challenge. He was brought to the prison, searched and entered the cell wearing regular clothes and having nothing but toothpaste, one five-dollar bill, two ten-dollar bills, and polished shoes. The guard retrieved it and brought it to the warden. When the warden examined the piece of white linen, attached to it was a five-dollar bill. The linen also contained a message that read, “Finder of this please deliver to Dr. Charles Ransome.” The warden was happy; he had intercepted the Thinking Machines first attempt to escape. The message to Dr. Ransome was “Epa cseot d’net niiy awe htto n’si sih. T.” Confused the warden wonder what this coded message could mean, but none the less was happy about intercepting the message.
When the first attempt had failed, the warden was ready for the second. When a prison guard came with The Thinking Machine’s dinner, The Thinking Machine started a conversation. He asked the guard if he would be willing to help him escape for a financial compensation. However, the guard was an honest man and went to the warden to report this.
