Blindness In Oedipus Rex

Oedipus the King is an Athenian tragedy written by Sophocles. The book tells the story about Oedipus’s life and he is also known as the king of Thebes. There are many type of blindess, not necessary has to be physical sight instead in the Oedipus the Kind, he was blinded to the truth of his own identity. Oedipus was technically has been blinded to the truth his whole life, and when he find the truth, he loses his physical vision. In the play, King Oedipus started life with his parents sent him off into the mountains to die, however a shepherd saved him. They passed him into Polybus and Merope, as he growing up he eventually became a king and by without knowing he marry his mother and kill his father. Oedipus was blind in more than one way, he was not only blind to the truth about his own identity but he was so blind that he would get mad at anyone who try to give him advice. And by the end when he finally force to get some sight and accepted the truth, he blinded himself. Another character in the play that is also deal with the blindness is Teiresias. Some of the hints we received during the play were when Teiresias told Oedipus the truth about his identity, we already have a good idea that the end it will be really bad. Another foreshadowing happened in the play is when Oedipus got mad and said to Tiresias that Tiresias will be stone-blind and deaf. By the end, Oedipus was almost exactly that. He lost everything, his vision and also his kingdom to his brother-in-law. By having the foreshadowing element in the play, it made the story more effective by created the tension, atmosphere, and also build up the suspense from the audience, not only that but it also help to grab the audience’s attention through out the whole
