The Blind Side has always been my favorite sports movie, but until this assignment I never knew it had so many hidden sports psychology aspects in it. It begins when the Tuohy family takes Michael Oher into their home. African Americans like Michael usually weren’t around the town where the Tuohy’s lived nor were they ever apart of a high-class family like the Tuohys. The family gave Michael a supportive environment and this is where the self-determination theory comes into play. They helped Michael to be able to express his three basic needs, which are competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The family gave Michael the perfect opportunities to succeed and they supported and encouraged him. This increased Micheal Oher intrinsic motivation because he was put in the right environment. The scene where Leigh Anne interrupts practice to coach Michael through the skill of blocking was a key sports psychology scene. In this scene the use of imagery was shown. Leigh Anne told Michael to view the quarterback as herself and the tailback as SJ. She did this because he had a very good protective instinct to protect his family. Social persuasion part of Self-Efficacy theory was used in this scene because Mrs. Tuohy knew how to coach Michael and knew how he understood things. He did not understand or listen when the coach yelled at him, so Mrs. Tuohy taught the coach that he should understand his players a little better. Stress and Anxiety was shown in this film during Michael College recruiting process. All the top coaches were offering him great deals and offers; however, his family was huge Ole Miss fans so he always had that lingering over him. He went on and chose Ole Miss and had a great college and professional career. I think this movie depicts these aspects of sports psychology very subtle, but very
