The Blind Side has always been my favorite sports movie, but until this assignment I never knew it had so many hidden sports psychology aspects in it. It begins when the Tuohy family takes Michael Oher into their home. African Americans like Michael usually weren’t around the town where the Tuohy’s lived nor were they ever apart of a high-class family like the Tuohys. People judge Leigh Anne (Mother) and Michael for this. One instance is when Leigh Anne was sitting at an expensive restaurant with her friends and they laugh about her “project in

The family gave Michael a supportive environment and this is where the self-determination theory comes into play. They helped Michael to be able to express his three basic needs, which are competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The family gave Michael the perfect opportunities to succeed and they supported and encouraged him. This increased Micheal Oher intrinsic motivation because he was put in the right environment. The scene where Leigh Anne interrupts practice to coach Michael through the skill of blocking was a key sports psychology scene. In this scene the use of imagery was shown. Leigh Anne told Michael to view the quarterback as herself and the tailback as SJ. She did this because he had a very good protective instinct to protect his family. Social persuasion part of Self-Efficacy theory was used in this scene because Mrs. Tuohy knew how to coach Michael and knew how he understood things. He did not understand or listen when the coach yelled at him, so Mrs. Tuohy taught the coach that he should understand his players a little better. Stress and Anxiety was shown in this film during Michael College recruiting process. All the top coaches were offering him great deals and offers; however, his family was huge Ole Miss fans so he always had that lingering over him. He went on and chose Ole Miss and had a great college and professional career. I think this movie depicts these aspects of sports psychology very subtle, but very

After discussing both the social cognitive theory and the cultivation theory in class, the opportunity was presented to choose a film that represented either the portrayal of social groups or violence in the media. For this assignment, I will be disucussing one of my all time favorites, Remember the Titans, and the repesentation of social groups in this film. The film takes place during the era of segregation and racial discrimination in our country. The men and women at TC Williams High School are segregated in every way, and specifically, the film focuses on the school’s football team.…

While comparing differences between behavioural lateralization between larvae and adults, it was expected that results from studies with larvae as test subjects would show variation in results. The variation in result was expected because larval stage of zebrafish develops really fast both morphologically and anatomically (Budaev & Andrew, 2009). However, the synthesis of behavioural lateralization in zebrafish literature states otherwise. The presence of inconsistency in results of adults can be explained by other factors such as experiences gathered by adult zebrafish were different in each test (housing conditions and labs). Whereas, larvae used in test were bred and reared in laboratory conditions; therefore, it is plausible that this factor affected the learning development of larvae and provided…

Fear is a two part behavior, the respondent component is the physiological responses from the stimuli, anxiety. The second part is operant, in that a person will avoid or flee a stimulus until the response decreases (Koehler, 2015). This is negative reinforcement, as it is the removal of the adverse stimuli. Together these responses make up fear (Miltenberger, 2015).…

Sleep, defined as a naturally recurring state of mind and body characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles, and reduced interactions with surroundings. As humans, we all experience sleep, however, others experience it differently. Although sleep is relatively important for all humans, each human encounters sleep differently. For example, one can sleep through the night without a problem, whereas others will experience insomnia, sleep paralysis, snoring, and other sleeping symptoms. As for the question of why some humans experience these disorders, it varies from inheritance to how one sleeps.…

The Effects of Context on Perceptions of Ambiguous Stimuli Introduction Perception can be defined as the process where the brain interprets the sensations it receives (Wortman & Loftus, 1992). The task of perception is to extract sensory inputs from the environment and organise them into meaningful percepts, which is what is perceived (Zimbardo & Weber, 1994). The perceptual set theory states that perception is an active process involving interpretation, selection and inference (Allport, 1955). Defined by Allport, a perceptual set is a “perceptual bias or predisposition or readiness to perceive particular features of a stimulus” (Allport, 1955).…

According to Cooper et al. , (2007), stimulus control is when the SD is altered by the presence or amplification of the antecedent stimulus (p. 393). For example, if the client does not brush teeth at school, but at home this could alter the SD. Therefore, it is important for the behavior analyst to determine which procedure to use. The authors stated that pre-attending skills are important when developing stimulus control (Cooper et al.…

During this psychology course we discussed many psychological concepts and terms. Many of the psychological concepts can be linked together, I have chosen five specific concepts that I will be defining and giving a personal example or scenario that I have personally experienced for each term. The first psychological concept I will be explaining is the bystander effect. The bystander effect is when individuals are less likely to help in times of need or in situations when other people are around. I have witnessed this in many situations, one specific situation was when I was in middle school my family…

It all started in 1964, with one murder, outside an apartment building where 38 witnesses did nothing. The bystander effect is a serious issue that has worked its way from the physical world to the online world. Social media outlets have contributed to the bystander effect in which nobody assumes responsibility in a crisis. In the “Kitty” Genovese Case in 1964, New York City, Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was brutally murdered on her way home.…

“The Blind Side” is a film depiction of the life of NFL left tackle, Michael Oher and his miraculous transition from being a homeless teen to becoming an NFL first round draft. The film follows the development of Michael as he is taken off the street by the Tuohy’s and with their support became involved with football. I chose this film because it portrays the social and behavioural development of a teen without a stable upbringing and how it affects his relationship and encounters with others. The movie does not only show the development aspect of one stage of adolescence but follows Michael’s character from childhood to his adult years. As well, the movie forms basis of comparison between Michael and the Tuohy children.…

Applying the theory of cognitive dissonance to events of historical past can be quite complex and takes a great deal of reflection. The theory is broad in nature, for this reason it can be applied to a vast number of social situations including, but not limited to, explaining white anger against blacks over slavery. Several studies have been conducted that show when people experience dissonance, to reduce that unpleasant conflict or feeling they either make up excuses or change their beliefs. Those made-up excuses or change of beliefs is why we still have racism today. Whites must justify to themselves and the world why the mistreatment of African Americans is acceptable.…
