The example I used portrays social influence. Social influence is when an individual or a group of people change your attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors about one or more people. My example connects to social influence because Michael changes the lives of Tuohy family. The movie shows the cultural and racial differences between Michael and Tuohy family where there are misunderstandings and how Michael and Tuohy’s overcome those differences. In the movie, Sandra Bullock states, “he is changing our lives.” And because of that, in the movie the Tuohy’s family decides to adapt Michael, regardless of the racial and cultural differences.

Individuality is the ability to be your own person, even when you are different from the group. My example connects to individuality because Cinderella does not feel pressured when she meets the Prince for the first time. She listens to her mother’s words of being kind and having courage. She takes away the entire event when she goes for the dance at the castle. Another example would be the Prince. The Prince is expected to marry a Princess, but he chooses to follow his heart and marry the girl of his dreams. And because of this, both the Prince and Cinderella portray individuality and independence in the movie.

The example I used portrays narcissism. Narcissism is the self-regard, self-centeredness which comes with one’s physical appearance or self-interests. My example connects to narcissism because in the song lyrics they focus on the materialism along with the arrogant behavior. In the song lyrics, there is an example where there is a relaxed and easygoing towards a customized car called Maybach. For example, “looking like wealth, about to call the paparazzi on myself,” this sums up a high level of arrogant behavior which portrays high levels of narcissism.

Individuality is the quality of a particular person that distinguishes them from others. Often times in the world, we are forced to give up our individuality and conform with others. In Logan Fey’s article, The Sociology of Leopard Man, he claims that to be a human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes, talents, morals, etc. I agree with Fey, that being human is to be an individual, but some of our traits have been influenced by other people, or sometimes we are forced to give up our individuality for certain things, but we all must find our own way of living as ourselves content in society. Being an individual human means that one develops their own personality, attributes, tastes, goals, talents, and morals.…

One point shows how sometimes, being to caught up as an individual shows selfishness and ignorance. On the other hand, individualisms definition is a theory of an individual's action over state control or collective community. The man in Anthem states, “I am a man. This miracle of me is mine to own and keep, and mine to guard, and mine to use and mine to kneel before (95).” Even though when an individual acts in selfishness, they can have a reason to do that certain thing for themselves.…

Broken windows in other terms are known to be neglected communities which involves crimes. In 1969, Philip Zimbardo, a psychologist from Stanford University, ran a field study. Zimbardo abandoned two cars in two very different places: one in a mostly poor, crime-ridden section of New York City, and the other in a fairly affluent neighborhood of Palo Alto, California. Both cars were left without license plates and parked with their hoods up. After just 10 minutes, passersby in New York City began vandalizing the car.…

Individuality is a very general idea about a certain lifestyle. While it can be perceived in many different ways, both Ralph Waldo Emerson and Washington Irving accurately describe it through different viewpoints in their works, titled “Self Reliance,” and “Rip Van Winkle,” respectively. This concept applies to all human lives, as everyone has internal debates on whether they are on the side of blending into society, and therefore not contributing to it, or pulling themselves out of society too much. While many people try to find different compromises between being an individual and being part of society, both of these works demonstrate the values and importance of both pulling yourself out of organized society and including yourself in groups…

Many films throughout history, have not only illuminated some culture’s shortcomings but the strength and ability to deviance in hopes of attaining meritocracy. It is within the arts, films, music and literature that are produced by a culture that researchers can identify the evolution of change from analyzing the micro symbolic interactionism between individuals to the social consensus in the functionalist theory that produces an organic solidarity. Each of these theoretical paradigms allow one the ability to change perspectives in order to deduce how values and norms are modified. Although each theoretical theory can be applied to the film, “The Blind Side” it is while utilizing the macro conflict theory, that social inequality is seen to…

I am applying intersectionality and the sociological imagination to my intersecting identities: gender, race, and class. By employing intersectionality and the sociological imagination, I am analyzing how my positionality affected my personal experiences while connecting those events with society. I am also employing the sociological imagination to five peer reviewed articles. In sociology, positionality examines one’s position of power and how their relationship is affected by social hierarchy. Positionality also focuses on someone’s position regarding their gender, race, and class.…

    Out The Window Sociology

I do agree that a large part of our virtues or vices are learned behaviors, from family, peers, culture, society norms. I believe children who grow up in a home that is warm, loving, supportive and safe tend to learn those behaviors, and bring them to the outside world. What I do not understand, and throws the entire thought process out the window, is when there is a rapist or murderer, whose home life was seemingly a loving stable place and yet they grow to do these horrible acts. I have a personal friend of mine whose child is in jail for rape and murder. I have known the person almost my entire life, no I was not always with them and certainly many things could have transpired over the years, the child's home life was not perfect, but…

Sociology is “the systematic study of human societies- everyday social life- out thoughts, actions, feelings, decisions, interactions, and so on- is the product of a complex interplay between societal forces and personal characteristics” (p.6). Prior to taking this sociology class I was unaware of how much sociology applied my everyday life and that’s where sociological imagination comes into play. Sociological imagination is the “ability to see the impact of social forces on our private lives” (p.18). People have different views upon life due to their sociological background, meaning where they were raised, ethnicity, background, culture, and family. The factor I will focus on throughout this paper are my status, social experience, and specific…
