Whether it be with just one parent or both and many a sibling, family is a community of never ending lines. My family was formed through the love of my parents who met on the luck of my father (Timothy Jerome Netek)’s friends betting that my mother (Inelda Lopez) would never give him a chance with her. Within this family had sprung my older sister Natalie and my little sister and brother Narissa and Timothy Jerome II and had allowed me without any effort to expand my community. And although this community was not one I had chosen it is one that I must learn to adapt to and learn to understand every member of my family/community on a daily basis as communities never remain constant. My family bonds over being childish and throwing jokes at one another and being loud and noisy and unnecessary at times but that is how we work, dysfunctionally. When constructing a friendship, one places many different building blocks for the friendship to function at its full potential. Building a friendship looks much like constructing a castle in the way that each block is important for the design to turn out perfectly. Sturdy building blocks carefully layered over time construct a healthy and vibrant friendship. If ignored, these building blocks will cause a compromised foundation of friendship. Although there are many important elements involved in building a strong friendship, the three I believe that one cannot do without include trust, loyalty, and common interests.…

The world is filled with myriad communities. When we consider community, many of us might consider stereotypical small-town living; that is, everything is local, everyone knows your name, and interpersonal interactions are face-to-face. When we think of community, we think of knocking on the neighbor's door for a cup of sugar. We might also think of the Utopian-minded communities spread across the U.S., occupied by people who partake in communal meals, share a majority of their belongings, and work on large gardens together. According to Joseph (2002a), community is about cultural, racial, or spacial boundaries that separate 'us' from 'them' (Joseph, 2002a, p. 1).…

The main conflict seen in this short story seems to exist between the characters and themselves. More specifically, all the characters seem to be confused over the concept of love and are left questioning "what [they] really know about love"(carver, 176). The reason this conflict even exists stems from the fact that every character attempts to define love. Terri believes that Ed, "the man she lived with before she lived with Mel loved her so much he tried to kill her"(Carver, 170). Ed's physical abuse towards Terri makes Mel feel as if "[that is] not love"(Carver, 171), however, Terri believes that the physical abuse was Ed's way of expressing love.…
