The ominous atmosphere comes from the original introduction of the Blair Witch from the town’s people especially the story about the house where the children were murdered by the “Blair Witch”, however the viewer puts this in the back of their minds because a crazy old man tells this story, and no other towns folk ever make mention of this story, so it is dismissed as being another crazy lore added on to the seemingly made up Blair Witch entity. Therefore, when the movie progresses slightly and they are inside the forest, all the eerie stories are thought by the viewer to be made up because nothing supernatural is going on. As the movie progresses further however, the viewer feels like something ominous is going on because rocks appear in front of their tent and stick figures appear in trees. The rocks and sticks are not directly scary, but when the viewer starts to let their imagination run wild it allows the viewer to start believing, not forced into believe, in something supernatural. Though as the movie continues, it becomes harder and harder to dismiss the idea of some sort of entity when they start get trapped in the woods because their compass stops working and they begin to walk in circles, thus allowing for a more eerie atmosphere
