Maya Angelou's Analysis

Improved Essays
I’m a 29 years old smart, reliable and funny senior studying strategic communication at the historical black Morgan State University, located in one of the most charming cities in the United States of America, Baltimore City.
Background:
I was born April 28, 1986 and raised in Baltimore, Md. I’m the oldest of three siblings in my immediate family and the mother of two beautiful daughters, ages eight and 13, whom I try my best to model the highest standards of being an African American female for.
I attended Alexander Hamilton, Featherbed Lane and Scott Branch Elementary Schools before attending Old Court and Lombard Middle schools. Going on to attend Walbrook Senior High School under the leadership of Principal Andrey Bundley. I’m also a 2014

However, I was never influenced by humans easily.
Experiences and people somewhat have definitely challenged and changed me though. There’s nothing unique about that, where I’m from, everyone at some point experience some type of continual adversity in their life.
However, overcoming (only God and books) adversity, became my mojo matriculating through the chapters of my life. I started this paper with a quote from one of my favorite authors, none other than the legendary, beautiful African American female revolutionists, Maya Angelou.
When I was about seven or eight years old, my mother brought me “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Angelou, a poem book for children that used amusing pictures and catchy short, three line poems to complement the picture.
This book among others, helped me become the person I am today, the reason I find strength in reading and feel empowered to live a purposeful life, not be frighten by it.
Weakness:
I would have to say that my biggest weakness is talking about or explaining my upbringing when tasked. I don’t like being judge based off of the culture and impoverished situation I was born

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

Reflection: On the Pulse of Morning Maya Angelou was the second poet to read the president's inauguration in 1993. I think Angelou poems should be read in all around America to get people to think, because we still have racial problems today. The poem begins with “A Rock, a River, a Tree” each of them are a symbol. The rock is a symbol of the future in Angelou's poem.…

In “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou, the speaker’s identity is slowly developed throughout the poem so that we are not completely sure of the speaker’s identity. The speaker is a black female that while she is speaking for herself, she is also speaking for an entire population of people just like her. People like her who are determined to rise above the historical oppression saying, “Leaving behind nights of terror and fear/ I rise/ Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear/ I rise…” (lines 35-38). The speaker conveys the motif of identity through her use of tone, repetition, and imagery. Tone plays a big role in the development of identity in the poem.…

In Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, we read about the experiences an oppressed African woman faces while living in America, she uses the medium of poetry to express the images and emotions she has struggled with in her life. Throughout the poem we get to see how she argues that even the saddest movements we experience in life can be transferred in a shift in perception, and that these movements can provide the foundation for an improved life. That it is an exercise in which it examines the choices people make in the way they perceive themselves, and the way these choices can alter their identity. Angelou demonstrates an example a way in which perception of the past can be altered to a revolutionary new way of thinking. Angelou’s narrator builds…
