There have been many instances in the news lately of protests following the shooting of an unarmed African American male by a white police officer. These riots have taken place in cities like Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland. In Ferguson the riot developed following the court’s ruling to not Indict the police officer in the case of Michael Brown. These cases are widely known due to national coverage, but people are unaware of the smaller cases that predate cases like that in Ferguson. This could be due to the fact that these smaller cases came before media decided to push the agenda of Black lives Matter. In my Mass communication class our teacher, Dr. Roberts argues that the “media is the message.” Basically media control how we …show more content…

Of the several discourse communities that I belong to, the most evident and probably the one that I identify with the most is the black community. Contrary to popular belief in this country, the black community does not exclusively include African Americans, but those who come from African descent such as people from Africa, the United States, Caribbean, and in some cases Europe and Central/South America. From our several shades of brown to our unique culture, this large, widespread group of individuals is my community; we represent the global black discourse community. The black community has experienced a significant amount of tension both within and outside the community.…

In the last few years one of the most prominent topics in the news has been police brutality. Unfortunately, a direct result of this brutality is the killings of many innocent black people. Through this, organizations like Black Lives Matter have been created to help bring attention to this topic. Black Lives Matter is an important movement for the black community because it forces us to examine institutional racism, police brutality, the deaths of innocent black people, and general racism more closely in a society that overwhelmingly and misguidedly believes that racism ended in the 1960’s. Let’s talk about institutionalized racism.…

A big topic that has risen in the past year is racism. Kathleen McCarthy, President of Smith College, sent an email to her students regarding to the deaths of two boys, Eric Garner and Michael Brown. In the email, she stated that all lives matter, this caused many students to criticize her for referring to the opposition of the saying “Black Lives Matter”. Many police officers today are now being criticized and presumed guilty when approaching any black man that is in the wrong. Throughout our great nation’s history, much has changed especially in the area of civil rights. Early in our history the owning of slaves was legal and was socially accepted (in fact it was a sign of a higher class), but as time went on, our nation made great progress and moved to outlaw slavery which set us on a path of freedom for all. Examining where we were, from a civil rights perspective, throughout our history can be quite fascinating. Going back to the time period of when Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) wrote The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is exceptionally interesting. Although it was post-Civil War there were still many anti-slavery governments throughout the South and the federal government had to place officers in parts of the South…
