Hynson writes her opinion on the Black Lives Matter movement and its connection to institutional racism. She addresses “non people of color,” writing that the misunderstanding of the movement comes from a difference in perspective; people of privilege are not able to understand the viewpoints of those who have been oppressed. One of her strongest points is that people try to dismiss Black Lives Matter and police brutality by claiming that black people make everything about race, but in reality race is unavoidably a large part of an African American’s life. Hyson’s article provides the reader with a perspective from a current student on the controversial movement. Hynson is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject of race and institutional racism; the article provides the reader with her subjective opinion on the topic.

He defends the presence of institutional racism in society with three key points: that some policies which are not racist in intent may take racist effect, that do policies exist that are both racist in intent and effect, and that institutions legitimize the racism of individuals. Marcellino integrates statistical evidence into the article, and successfully uses it to forward his thesis. He takes quotations from Campbell’s article and then uses his own research to disprove the quoted statements. Marcellino concludes his article by stating the only way to fix the problem of race in America is through
