BLM has pushed itself into the national conversation time and time again. The organization has branched out with chapters in 31 cities who operate independently. These chapters have held rallies, and boycotts across the United States. Since August of 2014, more than 1,030 protests actions have been held for BLM. Protest music has grasped the attention of the nation with songs from prominent artists such as Janelle Monae, Prince, J. Cole, Lauryn Hill and Rick Ross. The first national convention for BLM in July of 2015 drew over 1,000 percipients. According to NPR, researchers found through Twitter data that from June of 2014, just before the killing of Eric Garner in New York City, through May of 2015, shortly after the protests over the police killing of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, nearly 41 million tweets, 100,000 web links and dozens of interviews have been about the Black Lives Matter movement (Demby). In the same fashion, BLM has used its platform across social media to gain followers and awareness about the movement. BLM became part of the mainstream conversation when Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who was involved in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown was not indicted on November 25th. In the first 20 hours of November 25th, 2014 the #blacklivesmatter was used on Twitter about 10,000 times. In the four hours of the day following the verdict, it was used 92,784 times (Demby). Because of the increased support from the police for BLM, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake fired their police chiefs amid protests over police brutality in 2015 (Foran). Awareness and prevention of police brutality are two of the ideas that BLM advocates for. With this in mind, BLM activists are investing time and effort to recruit and train legal aid and emergency response networks(Foran).
