She glared at him and walked over to her teacher and kindly informed her of the discrepancy. The teacher immediately scolded the little boy, assigning him a seat in the very back of the room with the rest of the black children. Class started and Amelia began learning her time tables. Twenty minutes into class, the principal knocked on the door. She was followed by a young black girl with a muddy dress. The little girl introduced herself as Emory, as the students in the front snickered at her disheveled clothes. Amelia recognized the girl from earlier this morning and scowled at her. Emory gave a half-hearted smile and walked to the only remaining seat in the back. The teacher, forgetting the interruption, began writing words on the board and ordering the children to copy them down on their paper. Emory was so excited that she hugged Amelia in front of everybody, showing that she did not care if people knew she had a white friend. They hopped up on the carriage together and headed to the flower patch Amelia had discovered earlier that morning. They jumped and twirled around in the middle of all the white flowers, so happy to have found each other. This was the beginning of a great friendship that continued on for a very long time. As the sun began to set that day, they held hands and looked towards the heavens and saw a flock of doves flying
