The Black Cat versus The Tell-Tale Heart;
This essay will be on the two short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, known as The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat. Both of these stories have many specific characteristics in common, including the technique, but they also have some incredibly important differences between them both. This paper will be trying to compare and contrast both of these short stories and, with any luck, bring something to the reader’s attention that they didn’t notice at first glance.

In The Tell Tale Heart, our “hero” had his angers placed on the item that his conflict was against, the old man, or more specifically, his eye. On the other hand, in The Black Cat the main character simply chose to focus his anger towards a poor animal whom he had no real quarrel with, as well as whom had no quarrel at all with him. It seemed as though Poe wants to convey to us that sometimes one’s anger might be focused on something that can’t truly fight back, not under any realistic circumstances that …show more content…
Both stories open with the protagonist describing their lives up to date. “It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this!” In both stories, the characters seemed to have already passed judgement onto themselves as if to know what they would do was wrong. Did Poe possibly try to teach us some kind of lesson about our own
