Poe impedes the advance of the quick tempo; demanding its deceleration. When Poe decelerates this tempo, it furthermore affects the story’s tranquility, portraying the narrator’s ascension into optimism. This is shown when the narrator exclaims, “I fell suddenly calm, and lay smiling at the glittering death, as a child at some rare bauble”(69). This description, compared to a child entranced, by an ornament, portrays the narrator’s optimism; the scintillating surface of the bauble is positive, enlightening, optimistic. By introducing vibrant diction (which strays from the previous, adverse diction), Poe prompts a question: what persuades the narrator to think differently?…

Poe was buried with his wife and the narrator lies down inside the grave and is speculated to live out his days in said grave. This is shown in the poem as “And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side/ Of my darling-my darling-my life and my bride,/ In her sepulchre there by the sea-/ In her tomb by the sea.(Poe 38-40) This quote shows us how he finds living without his wife to be unbearable and lays with her in her grave to be close to her again. This very closely resembles Poe's life due to his life spiraling out of control and him becoming a severe alcoholic. With this information one can infer that Poe very much missed his wife and simultaneously the narrator feels the same…

Wow in the story the black cat the main character cuts of the cat's eye just because it bit him(Poe). This person is from a story called the black cat and I have three reasons why he is a psychopath. He also doesn't like humans as much as animals. He has no deep emotion which is a psychopath tendency and he has grandiose self-worth. He gave no other affection to any other animals but his cat. He would also push them off the other animals and kick them something also.(Poe)…

We, the audience, from the way that the narrator describes his reaction to the sentence, learn that the narrator is faint, and that he is passing in and out of consciousness. In the beginning, it says “the voices seemed merged in one dreamy intermediate hum” (Poe, 1). Evidence, that our narrator is in a dream-like state, which is later explain as unconsciousness. The narrator might feel that he must find out about his surroundings because he wants to find a way out, and it’s a compulsive human thing that if you’re trapped, you look for a way out.…

The Black Cat: Witches or Just Cats? I believe that both Pluto I and Pluto II are actually witches in the disguise of a black cat in the story, The Black Cat. It has been a well known superstition for hundreds of years that black cats are bad omens and are often witches. There has been a lifelong correlation between black cats and witches, in some instances the black cat is the witch’s favorite pet of choice and other cases the witch herself turns in a black cat. Therefore, it is not surprising as to why so many people, including myself, believe that the both of the Plutos are actually witches in the form of black cats.…

The fact that the caretaker stalks the man while he is sleeping creates that creepy and fearful sense. To point out, another one of Poe’s stories contains characters that are essential in creating this atmosphere. The characters from “The Black cat” help in establishing it as one of the characters is a ghost. The cat that is owned by the narrator is killed early on by the narrator himself and then reappears as the story progresses to cause him problems. The ghost like essence of the cat adds to the atmosphere of horror that is portrayed as the cat haunts and torments the narrator and causes him to get locked up.…

He is not a reliable narrator because he is emotionally unstable. Poe heightens the tension and fear running through the mind of the narrator. There is a clear connection between the language used by the narrator and his psychological state. The narrator switches between calm, logical statements and quick, irrational outbursts. Poe effectively conveys panic in the narrator’s voice, and the reader senses uneasiness and growing tension in the story.…

In this story, Poe shows the mental state of the character by having him explain all the actions he takes in great detail, but not anything else like his name or where he is now. When he was in the room with the old man he quoted, “ All in vain; because Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim”(38). I think the author is trying to show us how the character thinks that death is already upon the old man and that he will die anyways. After he kills the man he tells the reader, “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body”(39). Hear the author shows the mental state of the character by making the reader want to question his state of sanity and for the character to describe in detail what he did with the old man’s body after he killed him.…
