Recognized as an acclaimed genius, Edgar Allan Poe was famously known for his short story writings of death. His work is very well known in American Literature. He is known for sparking up gothic literature which is an extension of romantic literature. His popularity grew at that era because people grew interested in that sort of literature, he was very fortunate for being at the right moment of time for that kind of writing. Many of his famous writings contain a common theme psychotic character; the three stories that contain this certain theme are “The Black Cat”, “Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Tell-Tale Heart”.

The narrator insists he’s not mad in the beginning of the story His favorite pet is a cat named Pluto “which means Roman god of the underworld foreshadowing the narrator’s fate” (Prinsky). Eventually he succumbed to the use of alcohol each day he got worse not by depression but anger it was like the alcohol was the fuel for his burning rage this lead to him use strong verbal language to his wife and even offered to use personal violence the animals got it way worse except for Pluto his favorite it took a lot of willpower to restrain himself but for the other pets not so much. Once the alcohol took complete control of him the cat experienced his rage one night he was so upset but what ticked him off was that the cat would avoid his presence at all cost this didn’t suit the narrator so he seized him the cat did what any animal in the face of danger would do he fought back and bit him. These turn of events woke up the inner demon within him he quickly pulled out his penknife grabbed the poor creature by the throat and inserted the pen-knife into its eye and removed the socket eventually he ends up killing the cat by hanging it by a noose because it was a constant reminder of his actions.
