The narrator was insane because he says and you can infer that he is an alcoholism, depressed, and has a mental illness. They also argue that he is just a drunk but he still is aware of his actions. Another argument is that when your drunk you’re not in the right mind but still know what is happening. This couldn’t be because he specifically says he had a disease and infers that he didn’t know what he was doing and he didn’t fully understand his actions. He states in the quote that he forgot what he was doing and couldn’t control himself. Also if he was drinking, alcohol combined with a mental disease can make the disease worse or even completely change the person and make him act bi-polar.
In conclusion, he was insane and guilty but others believe that he was sane. This is right because of all the ideas and evidence that was found. So because he drank and had a mental disorder, it made him act out, unconscious, and not in the right mental state. Whenever he drank it made it worse which led to him doing bad things and not understanding them to a point where he almost never understood what he was
