Women being seen as property or objects in literature
Women are seen as objects within society, media and literature. The way society portrays women is that they are are to be perfect. The definition of perfect is created by mass media. In modern day society women are to be skinny but fat in all the right places. They are also expected to be sexual beings while remaining classy. These contradicting rules for perfection have led many men and women in wrong directions. Women feel that they are to give into males because they are suppose to be passive. While males feel that Women are their own position, that they are to treat them and do to them whatever they want. Two pieces of literature that show that this has always been a part of our culture are The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Lust by Susan Minot.

Men exploit the passive and deomesticity traits in women by stifling their voice and stripping them of their identities. If a woman is ambitious, or comes off to strong, she is deemed unattractive.…

There are issues that accompany civilization, one being male dominance. We have updated our train of thought into a more tolerant society and came to an agreement that women are as capable as men. Still, women live under societies’s and men's shadow that has been casted for centuries. Brent Staple’s essay “Just Walk on By” addresses the the power men have over women, referring to it as “male romance with the power to intimidate”(pg.).…

In The Scarlet Letter, the main protagonist Hester Prynne is quite a strong woman handling all these trials basically on her own. The author Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts Hester without many of the stereotypes that we know to have been in women's lives. I would hope that those stereotypes have been long since buried, but sadly some still remain. Although there are many differences as to how women were treated in the colonial time, mid-America, and our own generation. Sadly there are still stereotypes and sexist views in the world, however these stereotypes are only true in respect to certain people not women in general.…

A humans’ desire to defy Mother Nature can sometimes cause a problem to another human if it cannot be controlled. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “The Birthmark” illustrates a Man versus Nature theme as mans desire to fix what Mother Nature created leads him on a quest towards perfection. Humans are imperfect beings; therefore, they cannot be perfect despite their attempts through science. Furthermore, if one reaches perfection then they are no longer considered human. Thesis Statement: In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “The Birthmark,” the main character Aylmer pursuit for perfection conflicts directly with human mortality, ultimately resulting in the death of his wife, Georgiana.…

Lee’s works have been proven to be innovative in the sense that it covers most, if not all of the issues that arise in the black community. This statement is evident especially when he created one of my favorite films, Crooklyn. This is a film that goes into the “ideal” life of African Americans in the seventies. The most important idea to notice in this film is feminism. Feminism is so broad and shown in narrower topics that relate to it in this dramatic work.…

Jeffrey Howard, author of the article “Nathaniel Hawthorne’s , The Birthmark” has a similar argument in which he attributes Aylmer’s desire to remove the birthmark to his fear of it degrading his masculinity and his idea of physical perfection. Howard goes into detail and explains how the birthmark poses a threat to couple’s marriage by analyzing various forms of symbolism and allegory that exist within the story. Conor Walsh, author of the article “"Aminadab in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Birthmark” discusses Aylmer’s confrontations with nature and his inability to accept imperfections. Barbara. Eckstein, author of "Hawthorne 's "The Birthmark": Science and Romance as Belief” also argues that Aylmer longs to fix Natures’ imperfections due to his positon in society as a scientist while also explaining his desire for control.…
