The Birth of Venus is a book based during the 13th century Renaissance period, during a time where women had many restrictions set on them. In this book, art had a huge impact on the characters. During this time, it was completely inappropriate for a young girl to be educated, and definitely inappropriate to pursue the study of art. Alessandra Cecchi, the daughter of a wealthy prominent cloth merchant in Florence seeks for the freedom of marriage in order to paint. Alessandra was born with an unstoppable curiosity for the artistic world. However, she was not able to study painting like she would have been able to if she were born a male. Cristoforo promises Alessandra freedom to do all that she wants, but on her wedding night, Alessandra soon finds out that her marriage is just a lie. Infact, her husband only married her so that his homosexuality wouldn’t be discovered. Cristoforo was actually in love with Alessandra's brother, Tomaso. At times, Cristoforo would leave home for a while and during one of his times away, he came back with Alessandra's brother. Alessandra, realizing that her marriage was anything but normal, became depressed and had an emotional breakdown. Cristoforo believed that her crying was due to a miscarriage, so he turned the nursery into an art studio for Alessandra to use. During another one of his time away from home, Alessandra decided to go back to her parents home. Where a young painter who was hired by her father to paint a few frescoes in their family chapel was. Alessandra became intrigued with this young man and his amazing artistic ability. She wanted to paint like him and even asked for him to teach her. However, growing up in a monastery where it is improper to speak to a girl like Alessandra, he refuses to give her any lessons. She refuses to give up and eventually they form an almost dangerous
