The Birth of Muhammad and Islam Many people are aware of the meaning of the cross, which is a symbol of Christianity as well as the star of David which is a symbol in the Jewish religion. However, very few are knowledgeable about the fact that the crescent moon with the star is a representation of the Islamic religion. Although Islam is not as popularly studied as other various religions, it quickly rose from nothing to one of the most substantially influential religious empires to ever exist. Islam is also one of the youngest major religions as the “Qur’an “came down” to Muhammad six centuries after Jesus, so that a large portion of the developed world which it soon overran had been evangelized for centuries” (Burrell 1). The year was around 610 A.D. when the prophet was said to have been residing in a cave on the outskirts of Mecca to meditate. Little did he know, but Muhammad 's remoteness in the mountains would lead to his colossal duty of bringing the word of Allah to himself and his people. One night while Muhammad was meditating, he was approached and stunned by the appearance of an angel. Gabriel instructed Muhammad to read, but he was frightened and in disbelief. However, he was finally overcome with an undeniable sense of fulfillment and yearning to spread his news. On this night, the first part of the Quran was revealed to Muhammad. Gabriel continued to appear to Muhammad throughout various stages in his life to continue delivering messages from God. The revelation that occurred that night would set the ball rolling for the first few verses of the Quran. These revelations came to Muhammad as intense sounds and visions that would reveal words that would be forever etched into his memory. Muhammad gained an incredibly small following, but was empowered to continue preaching God’s word.
