Within the first few days of their fertilisation they are made up from 150 cell types and have the potential to be physically adjusted to become a stem cell and are pluripotent, meaning they can develop into any type of cell type in the human body. Problems with embryonic stem cells are that the cells can only be studied in laboratories by interrupting the embryo from further development. In New Zealand this type of research is not encouraged because of people’s beliefs in inhuman scientific research and their thoughts on whether or not the embryo is classified as a human being yet or not and scientists are “killing” people for experiments, also it is very technically advanced and difficult to undergo this type of scientific …show more content…
By altering at such an early state of fertilisation, scientists have the ability to alter the codes in order to form organs and tissues, and have further abilities of even creating clones which is already beginning to be studied in New Zealand medical and scientific fields with great success. Studies on cow clones are being conducted in the south island currently. Although there is much potential through embryonic stem cells it does require donors of embryos to scientific laboratories which people are very two sided about the ethical principles behind the stem cells being humane or inhumane.
What are Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells?
Induced pluripotent stem cells are regular tissue cells that scientists have modified to behave like embryonic stem cells. Like an embryonic stem cell, induced pluripotent stem cells have the ability to form into any kind of tissue in the human body. They are a more humane alternative to embryonic stem cells.
How can Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell research useful in medical fields in NZ?
Induced pluripotent stem cells are a more humane way of scientifically altering cells into stem cells, medical fields would find this a greater comparative to embryonic stem cells to research on in their medication, cloning and tissue repairing.
