Personal Narrative: The Dynamics Of My Family

When looking at my development, I’d say I grew up differently compared to others around me. The biggest influence on who I am comes from the dynamic of my family. To begin, two years before I was born, my father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. At the age of two he completely lost his vision. When this first happened, they initially thought it was a brain tumor. My mom had me with the idea in her mind that she might be a single mother in the near future. Shortly after he lost his vision, they came to the conclusion that it was actually Multiple Sclerosis. This had a huge impact on not only my family, but also my upbringing. My dad was originally a sheet metal worker, meaning with the loss of his vision he was now unable to work. This forced my mom to take on even more responsibility. She became a full time worker, full time mother, and soon to be a full time caretaker. As the years went on my dad slowly lost the majority of his mobility. Because my mom had to work full time Monday through Friday, it became my job to take care of him as soon as I …show more content…
My grandparents are going on over 60 years of being married to each other, and show nothing but love towards their children. My mom talks to her parents once, sometimes twice, on a daily basis. They’re always asking about how my dad is doing, and how I’m doing. They’ve become an incredible support system for my family. My grandpa was a doctor for years before he retired, which makes him helpful with my father. We frequently go on vacation with my grandparents, and spend a lot of time with my mom’s siblings and their children. It’s as though they’re my dad’s original family. We don’t live as close to them as we do my father’s family, so it can be hard to see them all the time. This only makes me appreciate the moments I do get with them even more. They’re always invested in our lives and making sure we have help if we ever need

I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

My family of origin was comprised of my parents, myself, and my younger brother. David was born three years after me, and we filled the functional roles of “oldest child” and “youngest child” perfectly. As described by McGoldrick, Gerson, & Petry (2008), “oldest children are likely to be the over responsible and conscientious ones in the family” (p.126). I was always expected to perform academically and conduct myself with high moral standards. I did as was expected, and I do not remember ever questioning the situation.…

I spent many hours after school sitting in the sparsely active cafeteria, while she served the students with a smile on her face. My Grandma was a kind, selfless woman who would never let you go hungry. She instilled in me how important it is to take care of the people around you, so that when you are in need, they will take care of you. It’s cliche, I know, but the world truly did lose a great human being. After her passing, My Mimi, who is my father’s grandmother, took me in and supplied me everything I needed to succeed in life.…
