The Big Fix Summary

Great Essays
The YouTube video, The Big Fix: The 1985 Patrick Ewing NBA Lottery, indicated that the reason why the envelope was thrown in there like that was because Jack Wagner was purposely marking which envelope contained the Knicks logo. When Stern would see the marked envelope, he would go in there and pick up the envelope. After the globe was spun several times, the globe was opened and the commissioner visibly exhaled like he was deeply nervous. The video then suggested that Stern did that because he was nervous that they would be exposed, because why else would he have been so nervous (Sizzle King)? Finally, when Stern reached into the globe, he made an awkward hand gesture. When he reached in there, he grabbed some of the envelopes, flipped them …show more content…
In addition, even the main questions behind the conspiracy theory can be plausible as well. It does seem suspicious that the New York Knicks lottery envelope was distinctly marked and that it just so happened to be selected by the commissioner. However, even though this conspiracy theory makes sense, it does not provide enough factual evidence for it to be taken seriously. Yes, there was a connection between Ernst & Whinney and Gulf & Western. However, this connection was small and most likely a mistake by the NBA rather than evidence of a scam. Even though the envelope was marked, it simply does not seem logical that not only would Stern find the marked envelope in a matter of a couple of seconds, but also that he would do this in front of a nationally televised audience. It just seems that most of the evidence being presented is circumstantial and not …show more content…
Though not all fans believe in this theory, there are a considerable amount that do believe in it. For those who believe in it, conspiracies like this one deeply influence not only what they believe about the their team, but also the rest of the NBA. If the NBA is fixed, then nothing about the NBA is real. As a sports fan, part of what makes it so great is the reality of sports. Take the actual NBA Draft as an example. As players get drafted, many of them express raw emotions that demonstrate how much of a life changing experience getting drafted is. When considering how these players are able to actually achieve their life long dream of playing in the NBA, it is part of why the NBA Draft is such a great thing. However, if everything is fixed and certain teams are suppose to win and others are suppose to lose, then what is the point of playing. As a fan, what is the point of cheering for his/her favorite team when he/she knows that everything is rigged. If enough people were to believe this mindset, then that would deeply impact both how people view the NBA and the number of people that view the NBA. Even though this is the mindset of some people who believe that the NBA is rigged, as of now, there is simply not enough evidence to say that it is rigged. Unless Stern or some prominent member involved with the 1985 NBA Draft Lottery were to come out publicly and say that it was rigged, there is no way

The players in the scam knew they would be getting a big payout because they were the best team in the league and everybody knew it, and the odds were extremely on their side to win so by betting against themselves and having them lose would mean they would get a lot more money than they would ever see coming from Comiskey’s cheap pockets. The reason…

This was a major clue to the reader, that something was not quite right. Lottery's, in general don’t involve the need for rocks to participate in a lottery. When Mr. Summers need help with the black box “there was a hesitation before two men... came forward”(444). The fact that their was hesitation in the crowed, gave us another clue that something wasn’t right. Evident to the fact that, at the end a member of the community was killed in such a horrific way; all do to their tradition.…

Maybe the rules should be changed, so that the same team can’t keep winning the draft lottery. I’m sure a fan of the Timberwolves or the Kings would agree. They’ve never won the lottery, even though it seems like they’ve had losing seasons for the past century. But with Joel Embiid’s foot injury, it will be interesting to see what the Cavs decide to do with the 1st pick.…

There are hundreds upon thousands of men and women making millions of dollars quite simply because they excel at hurling an orange ball into a circular hoop. Bill Simmons wrote a nine page article about an oversized man’s “legacy” of putting a ball into said hoop. This poses a rather difficult question, are athletes really worth all of that money flowing into their pockets? The answer, shocking as it may be to some, is yes.…

Professional athletes, especially NBA players are harshly criticized of their high salaries because many people feel what they do does not amount to what they are being paid. They feel NBA players aren’t contributing enough to be paid on that magnitude. Many people can’t stand that NBA players are paid millions while teachers, doctors, lawyers, or other professions are making nothing compared to them. Many strongly feel that NBA players do nothing more than play a ball game. However, there is a lot that NBA players do that people are unaware of.…

NBA Players Getting paid too much Are NBA players getting paid too much? Most people think that it is ridiculous for NBA players to get paid millions of dollars; especially when there are millions of people unemployed and/or living in poverty debts with other nations. Millions that we are paying to NBA players could go towards something that we are having trouble with like poverty and unemployment. NBA players are getting paid too much because NBA rookies start off with millions, most of NBA players are getting paid over 20 million a year and NBA players last season got paid by point. This is ridiculous that NBA players are getting paid and starting off with this much.…

Palaima: “ There are about 400,000 student athletes nationwide, and 99.5 percent of them will spend their lives doing something other than playing professional sports,” yet even with this knowledge the NCAA perpetuates and engages in a system that sets these student athletes up for failure. There is no other explanation for these actions other than the NCAA own prestige and monetary gain. Another source that touches on these issues is a documentary titled “Hoop Dreams” directed by Steve James; the documentary follows two young Black men raised in poverty. The only reason these young men are afforded any opportunity to receive a form of higher education is their prospective athletic worth. The institutions, coaches, and talent scouts only appear interested in the two main characters of the documentary as a means of prestige or income.…

There are many players that are more than ready to begin in the NBA but they are being held back by college. For example if there is a high school player who is more than ready to play in the NBA why not let him play in the NBA instead of holding them back by college they should just be allowed to pursue their dream and not have going to college get in the way. Many of the players that averaged amazing numbers in high school will end up averaging something close to that in college so why not just let them skip college and go average amazing numbers in the NBA. Coaches for college just draft prospects and see them go “Everyone hates him to being Darth Vader and the leader of an evil empire and how he's ruining college basketball because all does is recruit five star recruits” (Stephen Proffitt) and the fans clearly don't like it. Sometimes the NBA and the players in it will give the player from high school a shock or wake up call to work harder to average what they averaged in high school so that is a benefit to them.…

Also, the NCAA states that their college athletes should be putting academics first and their athletics second. This might not truly be the case, but this is what the NCAA wants to impression onto their college athletes. Although, the NCAA states this message, it most certainly is not the case for many of their college athletes. In a recent study, it was found that between the years of 2006 and 2016, 114 college basketball players left their college after one year to pursue a career in the NBA and became drafted (Hero Sports). This statistic is simply including college basketball players that left their college to pursue the NBA and were drafted.…

What nineteen or twenty year old doesn’t want millions of dollars if they are talented enough? [MC(12)] Going from college where they do not make any money, unless they have a job, which is unlikely due to the fact that they are always practicing basketball, to making over $500k dollars per year on the first contract that you sign can make anyone change their mind on the topic. Another argument that could be made for these younger players to enter the draft would be that the NBA Players Association could help them take care of their finances and continue to help them grow and develop their maturity as well, throughout the early stages of their NBA careers (NBPA, 1). Granted, these reasons are both sufficient enough to at least consider the dropping of the age rule in the NBA, but there is truly not enough support or evidence in favor of…
