The Big Bang Theory is the current theory of the origin of the universe that has largely been accepted by scientists, however it is not one hundred percent correct as modifications of the theory is continuously being developed as new discoveries, observations and calculations are being made.
In the beginning in the universe, there was nothing, no space, no matter, no light, no time and no sound. Then there was a sudden explosion of energy which we now call the Big Bang. But there was no BANG as there was no sound and no matter thrown out, as matter had not been formed yet. In 1905, Einstein, using his special theory of relativity showed that mass is actually just another form of energy and that in fact, they are equivalent. Equation E=mc2, (E=the energy released by an object in joules, m= the change in mass of an object in kg, c= the speed of light which is 3x108m.s-1.

Friedmann proved mathematically that the universe is expanding. However, he made some assumptions in order to prove it. Hubble showed that the Universe is expanding by showing that almost all the galaxies are red shifted, meaning that they are moving away from us.
