The Bible: I Relate To Fil Anderson

Improved Essays
I relate to Fil Anderson when he said he read the Bible to support his own interests and desires. He read and listened to what he wanted to hear and picked and chose parts in the Bible that he liked. This resignates with me - It’s so easy to do! But I have learnt from reading this that God wants us to read the Bible with open ears to listen to him and allow him to transform our lives. Now before I have my quiet time I am going to pray, “Lord, right now as I read your Word, will you take this time to speak to me about how I can grow more like you, will you convict me, and transform my life. I’m opening my heart and ears to what you have to say.” Keeping in mind the ultimate goal in mind to be formed not informed.

As Michael Brown states in What They Don’t Tell you: A Survivor’s Guide to Biblical Studies: a Bible study focuses more on helping people to either understand what God wants in their life or how to be a better Christian. Sometimes Bible study helps solidify theological beliefs, or to develop new theological beliefs. As Brown stated, Bible study is often more of a mid week worship than a scholarly breakdown of the Bible. On the other hand, Biblical study differs from Sunday School because you study more than just the Bible itself. You study the historical context, such as the political climate, economics of the time, laws of the time, etc.…

    Sermon On The Mount

This passage is a part of so called ‘Sermon on the Mount’ scene in which Jesus is educating his disciples and giving a new insight into issues, some of which were also covered in the Old Testament. The text stands out because it describes Jesus’ approach to reapplying the ‘Law’ in a new way and yet still shows that ‘his coming and work fulfilled the old prophecy’. The theme of Matthew’s gospel is based around the idea of Christocentricity through which the author portrays the correlation between the Old and New Testament. The two verses (17 and 18) conflict each other which may signify that Matthew’s Gospel has developed from Judaism and since the author highlights the validity of the ‘Law’, it might be assumed that the gospel was…

    1 Samuel Turning Point

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as immorality and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king. I enjoyed this week’s devotional as it asked us to contemplate and respond after reading the context of 1 Samuel. This answer for me was both a turning point and a starting point as both of these have a point in our lives where it lets us begin to see a brighter picture as this lets us be more honest with ourselves as we recognize how we really feel from the inside. Sometimes our life doesn’t meet our standards or expectations which leads to an emptiness that tells us that we have not found this solid ground that we are searching for.…

Before deciding to attend CTS, my primary goal was to first learn the Bible, become a minister and teach the Bible to others. I marvel at clergy that quote scriptures from their mouths without looking first hand and anticipate the day when I can do the same. The Bible contains answers to everyday issues (the good, the bad and the ugly) and helps us to learn about theology and ourselves. For this reason, I stand more excited about taking this class as opposed to many of my other classes. By learning the Bible my life would be enhanced and guided in the direction initially intended by the Lord.…

Sometimes my focus is seeking God through prayer and meditation, however, this can also be accomplished if I allow the Word of God to be transformative. The Bible is inclusive. I can relate to David’s anguish in the Psalms or Job’s plight of suffering. I can find hope and comfort in the Words of Jesus. I believe approaching the Bible with an open mind and an open heart allows anyone to be able to relate and in that way understanding and growth occurs.…

How would we, as Christians, live our lives without the Bible? The Bible plays a key aspect in our roles as Christians. Specific Bible stories and topics such as Mt. Sinai, Moses, God’s covenants to us, and the martyrdom of Stephen give us a clear understanding that even though God is not physically present in the world today, He still uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things under His name. The Bible is crucial for us as Christians, for it is a constant reminder that we truly do serve a loving and unfailing God. He will use our worst situations to make us stronger.…

The sermon was about two hours long and focused on their belief that unless one believed in the messaged of the founder Felix Manalo, reconciliation with God was impossible. I gathered that the INC is not a believer in sola fide, but strictly observes sola scriptura. They are resolute that only their church has the correct translation of the scriptures of the Bible, and I got the impression that only the church hierarchy had the knowledge and authority to make this interpretation. After the sermon, I was invited to partake of a pot luck gathering they had after the service and I took that opportunity to mingle with the members.…

Thirdly, silence helps us focus. This extends to all areas of our life, but is definitely a benefit in our walk with God. Aside from being still and listening, if we are silent, we can focus on reading and writing in ways that glorify God.
