Introduction
Debates between religion and science have been ongoing ever since both disciplines have co-existed in society. Can one accept scientific understandings of the world and still preserve their faith in a higher being? In order to analyze the compatibility of religion and science we should define each discipline. In this essay, science is knowledge of the natural world based on facts learned through empirical evidence, theories and data, while religion is the belief in a higher being without need of proof. I will only focus on one aspect of religion which is the belief in a higher being and not the specific elements of respective religions such as the Bible. Religion and science serve different purposes; religion is used to answer

Therefore, religion and science can exist together without conflict if it serves the correct purpose.
Explication
The compatibility of religion and science has been an ongoing discourse for as long as methodologies of science has been introduced in human civilization, as discussed by David Hume in “Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion”. Hume explores whether existence of a divine being should be through rational experience or religious philosophy. He attempts to reconcile the conflict of scientific methodology to religious philosophy which is relevant to the coexistence of faith and science. He presents three characters to create a dialogue concerning natural religion. All three characters believe in God. However, they have different views on natural sciences and its relationship with religion. Philo has a pessimistic view on natural science and demonstrates skepticism, an attitude of doubting the truth. He argues that certain knowledge is impossible and finds science inexplicable and contradictory but is mostly against superstition. Meanwhile, Demea comments that students require knowledge on sciences first and theology last in order to expose the mind to the “ridiculous

To begin with, religion and science are not mutually exclusive, many religious dominations accept evolution. For example, institutions such as catholic schools teach science and religion as requirement. Also, religious institutions support scientific research endeavors. This shows that faith in a higher being and science can work together to help educate and expand people’s minds. As opposed to choosing one from another. Therefore, a person can have knowledge of science and keep their faith. Secondly, both can serve complementary purposes since each covers one field and mostly stays out the other. For example, without knowledge of chemistry, biology, physics our convenient modern lives wouldn’t be possible such as electricity, transportation and communication. It explains the mechanics of how our universe works. On the other hand, concepts such as the ultimate reality is a question that only religion offers answers. Also, the psychological and social roles that faith brings because religion fosters a sense of belonging in a community and comfort. Neither science nor religion independently holds the answers to everything but together they can complement and strengthen each other. Furthermore, as human beings we are always searching for existential questions, both attempt to answer

For centuries, religion has been a topic of great debate and interest, stemming from the validity of ideals to reasons why people believe in it in the first place. Despite all the efforts over time to thwart religion, it has managed to remain as a prominent structure. One question that seems to always be brought to the table is how religion continues to exist in light of the continual advances of science. The reason religion continues to exist today is not because the furthering of science leads to disproving religion, but rather because religion addresses questions that currently not even the advances of science can answer, giving people a sense of unity and congregation based upon two key emotions: hope and fear.…

In modern times religion and science are increasingly becoming viewed as incompatible, or at least non-overlapping. Damien Keown states that “Scientific discoveries, and theories such as evolution, have challenged many traditional Christian teachings…” at the expense of making them appear “...dogmatic, irrational, and backward-looking” (119). Despite its brief history in the West, Buddhism has gained increasing popularity in part due to its frequent portrayal as an exception to the conflict between scientific and spiritual thought. Proponents of this view—deemed “Buddhist Modernists” or “Secular Buddhists”—argue that Buddhism possesses certain qualities which make it compatible with a secular view of the world, while providing a source of purpose…

James proposed that science and religion can coexist harmoniously, because both disciplines play a concrete function in the lives of their followers, and, thus, are simultaneously true systems of meaning. While James ' philosophy of pragmatism was not one that was received without criticism, the fact that he attempted to bridge the divide between science and religion, two disciplines which had been in contention for centuries, is a truly remarkable feat and a testament to James ' lasting legacy as one of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth…

Some things are beyond scientific evolution and cannot even begin to be explained, such as proof of God’s existence or how humans were brought about. Science can provide man with physical wholeness. Through gaining scientific evidence, mankind feels that they have gained more knowledge about the world around them. On the other hand, religion alone can fulfill spiritual needs, it is a social phenomenon as well as personal and individual one. Religion fulfills our spiritual needs by giving us internal reassurance that after death our spirits will carry on in the afterlife.…

The Importance of Sacred Mathematics in the Advance of Science Section 1: Introduction Within this paper, I will argue that the viewpoint that divinity and mathematics were interrelated was a common and important motivator in the advancement of the sciences. In the modern age, a common view is that science and religion are opposites and that belief in one means refutation of the other to some degree. However, we can look back through history and see that the exact opposite is commonly true. Religion and science were hand in hand from the days of Pythagoras and as recent as Kepler.…

Nowadays, people believe religion and science are in conflict with one another; a study created by Troy Van Voorhis, an MIT Chemistry professor, expressed how seventy percent of young adults between the ages 18-23 agreed on the perceived idea that there is an existing dispute between these branches. However, the reality is that only eleven percent of Americans belong to a religion which denies findings of modern science, and 52 percent of scientist believe that there is a superhuman being or spirit which has power over nature and/or human fortunes. Moreover, Voorhis declared how, although, he studies science for a living, it may not answer all questions. “We are left with a feeling that there must be something more… Christianity doesn’t limit…

Determining the root to the problem between science and religion is a task that many try to explain. The contrasting viewpoints often contradict each other and sometimes validates an idea established. This area of conflict is most prevalent in the Scientific Revolution, where many began to get into the habit of questioning and understanding the human role within the world. With help from philosophers, mathematicians, and poets the shift from narrow to broad perception of the world began. At the turn of the seventeenth century, the location of the Earth and the Sun was often questioned.…

The contributions of these communities include the translation of scientific studies, the proliferation of ideas, the building of rational, empirical frameworks and more, and each of these have had a positive effect on scientific progress. Therefore, while religion has at times come into conflict with science, it is not inherently opposed to it, and can actually be beneficial to its…

Similarly, the authors of Neuroscience, Psychology, and Religion discussed the relationship between science and religion presenting it as either a warfare or partnership. Jeeves and Brown discuss the historical debate of science and religion depicting the tumultuous reversal of common ideology throughout the past. Contact [1997] is an excellent science-fiction film in which humanity is contacted by extraterrestrial intelligence. One of the main messages this film sends is that the reconciliation of science and religion is possible, but only when the two are in their pure forms, and that pure science and religion both increase the efficiency in which we determine the truths about our universe. Another more subtle message that I feel the movie portrays is that our current form of language is very limited and it also shows what it would be like to have a higher level of consciousness by causing Ellie to experience a very powerful mental hallucination. Before I get into why religion and science can only be reconciled when they are both in their pure…

Do science and religion overlap in any form when considering the topic of evolution? Fundamentally science and religion strive to answer different questions. Science focusing on the how, whereas religion focuses on the why. However, where both of these entities share common ground is in their most basic purpose; to discover the truth. The sorts of questions that religion is concerned with verses the purpose of science are both key factors of the similarities and differences that arise between science and religion on the topic of evolution.…

Though today this argument between science and religion is often seen today as something of the past and something that is now very trivial, the divide between these two systems of beliefs is more prevalent we know. This divide is affecting not only the education that people in America and around the world are receiving, but the care they are receiving in contrast with the care that they deserve, and the knowledge they are willing to accept, along with the diversity that surrounds them everyday. The fact that this divide is no longer given much attention can have serious consequences in terms of the quality of life of all individuals in societies all around the world. It could very well be true that efforts towards bringing together the concepts of science and religion, whether it be by creating efforts to connect the two or creating efforts in order to let them harmoniously coexist, could be a determining factor of the success of not only society as it exists today but also of the generations that have yet to…

Eventually, a transition occurred where analytical philosophy was based out of metaphysical schools. This development allowed for a closer connection between science and religion leading to its rise, as well as the field of philosophy of religion. (Fehige, "Contributions of Philosophy") Through the field of philosophy and religion, science could begin to appear in academic articles in conjunction with topics like creationism. Although the philosophy of religion helped lead to the development of the field, it did not lack its controversies.…
