To Southerners, the Civil War was similar to the American Revolutionary War because they felt as if their rights were being stripped away. The government seemingly turned their backs to the North’s personal liberty laws even though it broke the law, but everyone jumped on the South for relying on agriculture and slavery. I also believe that slavery was the central conflict of the Civil War because the political parties, the Republican Party in particular, were formed around the issue of slavery. The South felt as if they lacked any sort of say in what the federal government proposed and after Lincoln was elected, they felt vilified because the Republican Party was set against the expansion of slavery. Furthermore, the Lincoln-Douglas debates earlier on were mainly on the slavery and how it should handled. The way each region perceived slavery was a major factor in the road to secession and war because without it, the South believed they were left with nothing. With no slaves, the Southern economy would drop because no one would farm their crops or help them carry out
