In Anton Chekhov’s story, “The Bet”, a banker had a party fifteen years ago where a debate on wither criminals should be put to death or if they should be sentenced to a life in prison came up as a discussion topic. The banker said that criminals should be put to death, but a lawyer said that criminals should have a life in prison. The banker and lawyer’s argument over this topic ended with a bet by the banker saying that if the lawyer could stand being confined in one room for fifteen years in the banker’s house the banker would pay the lawyer two million. The banker ends up regretting his bet with the lawyer and he was about kill the lawyer the night before the fifteen years of confinement were over. The banker stops midway on his plan because he sees a note written by the lawyer saying the lawyer has learned there are more important things in life than money from his time spent locked in that room, and how the lawyer plans to escape the in morning to get rid of the bet (The Bet). The lawyer shows his rejection of all religious and moral principles by the letter he wrote to the banker where he talks about the books he read while locked in the room, and the banker shows Chekhov’s vision of life goes beyond the denial of moral values by how the banker reacts to the lawyer after fifteen years have passed.
