The Berlin Boxing Club was written by Robert Sharenow and told the story of a boy named Karl during the early years of Hitler’s rule in Germany. The main character, Karl, started off as a scrawny, defenseless man. But once put to training, he was up to be German’s greatest boxer. Karl was also Jewish, but unlike his family, he didn’t carry the Jewish physical features. This book covers five years of Karl’s life, and how he has trained under German boxing world champion Max Schmeling. Karl and Max met at one of his father’s art gallery walkthroughs. Max believes he possesses all the traits to become a great boxer. This book also covers Karl’s life at school and how they stereotyped him as Jewish, and how he was expelled from school for having Jewish ancestors. His boxing career plummets as people find out he is Jewish and is disqualified from many tournaments. A few months later, Karl’s father is accused of being a traitor and is thrown into jail. It is up to Karl to ask Max for help to get them enough money to escape to America before anything gets worse.

It is easy to learn through a textbook but you do not know how the people are feeling as this is going on. This historical fiction novel covers some gruesome things such as restaurants in Germany having signs in their windows that read ‘No Jews Allowed’ and all Jewish people being kicked out of public school. It was even more devastating because of the main character, Karl, and how he was Jewish. I also think he wanted the reader of the book to understand that nobody expected Hitler to go that far, they all thought it was going to pass. In the book, they would keep saying that this is just like any other political issue and it would pass.
