It is easy to learn through a textbook but you do not know how the people are feeling as this is going on. This historical fiction novel covers some gruesome things such as restaurants in Germany having signs in their windows that read ‘No Jews Allowed’ and all Jewish people being kicked out of public school. It was even more devastating because of the main character, Karl, and how he was Jewish. I also think he wanted the reader of the book to understand that nobody expected Hitler to go that far, they all thought it was going to pass.
