Humor fails when a line is crossed. The older we get, the more we may realize how we should learn the circumstances in which humor might be used. The timing must always be right or it could place a strain on a situation such as a relationship. The Benign Violation Theory says that, “A joke can fail in one of two ways: it can be too benign, and therefore boring, or it can be too much of a violation, and therefore offensive. To be funny, a joke has to land in that sweet spot between the two extremes” (McGraw, “Humor Code 2” par. 10). In other words, The Benign Violation Theory is that something is funny under the conditions of being “it violates the way we think” and the other being it violates us or our way of thinking in a non-threatening way …show more content…

The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

There are many ways things can be humorous. To be considered humorous, however, a literature piece should have some aspects of humor in it. Dave Barry, an award winning author and columnist, wrote the very rhetorical “Dave Barry 's Manliness Manifesto”. Barry’s key to making his piece humorous was by using common humor elements; such as, satire and irony. Rachel Callman, a writer for Tosh.0, is the author of “Selfie’s Word of the Year Acceptance Speech,” which is a very satirical piece which depicts a stereotypical personification of the word selfie.…

The stance that Alain de Botton took in his 2004 book, Stress Anxiety correctly addressed the goal of humorists and their effect on society. He states that humor is used, “ to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly.” In other words, humor used as a means to address the elephant in the room without fear of repercussion. Effective humorists have the ability to prompt or sway a person’s opinion in a way that a politician's speech simply can not.…

Some subjects are considered dangerous or impossible to address formally or face to face. Therefore, that’s where humorists play a role. Alaine de Botton, author of “Status Anxiety,” believes that because humorists can say things that other people will not, they are there to convey messages that are too dangerous to state directly. Humorists, like ones on Saturday Night Live and in movies, use comedy and jokes to bring about difficult messages. Saturday Night Live (SNL) often uses satirical skits to convey a deeper message.…

I usually find satisfaction when an example of comedic wit comes to light. The art of sarcasm, and the structure of satire have never ceased to amuse me. Although, when this specific brand of “humor” comes about, I sit back not to marvel at the thought or eloquence of the speech, but to restrain my own deeply rooted antipathy. When these graceless, crude masses shove their way into conversation, I watch in disdain as they merely beg for the attention of their audience. My muscles tense and cringe while my fingers curl reflecting my desire to retreat from an area so comically contaminated.…

Humor is most definitely an important part of the specific writing techniques that Corina Zappia uses. She uses this humor to describe the unique Filipino dishes in a way that makes you want to laugh and hold back vomit all in one sitting. Another great example of this unique humor that adds to what you're saying is when Zappia talks about pig's blood stew. She describes the stew with disgust, stating, "the opaque, blackish-gray stew sitting there like some dark metaphorical abyss, The Heart of Darkness trapped between paper napkins and the rice cooker." (Zappia 58).…

In her article “Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious,” Antonia Peacocke discusses how those who watch the show Family Guy should realize the creators’ jokes should be viewed as what they are intended to be: a harsh reality rather than crude. Peacocke argues that when taken at face value, Family Guy’s humor could potentially be considered offensive. Instead, the creator Seth Macfarlane intelligently uses satire to mock American culture. The article is overall effective with one minor weakness. The article gains a majority of its effectiveness from the author providing her own personal experiences to help the reader relate to the topic at hand, and by pulling examples straight from the show to back up her argument.…

Comically Crude The line drawn between comedy and vulgar references have become blurred in today's society. A comedian may make a joke which offends a great body of people all for the purpose of making a few laugh. Famous comedians make a living off of exploiting both groups, and individual peoples, with derogatory comments in order to make large masses of money. In the past, comedians would cross social lines and force society forward using both obscene language and seemingly deranged or lewd topics.…

Whether it be on the radio, in person during stand up, or on television, comedy is an easy way to lighten the mood and make easy conversation out of controversial topics. Comedy in television is a crucial role in the everyday community when it comes to not only discussing debatable topics, but diffusing them as well. Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
