The Pros And Cons Of Whaling

1. I do agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption. These two countries claimed that whaling made up an important part of their cultural legacy and I feel that these countries have the right to preserve this cultural legacy as long as certain conditions are met. The conditions that I believe should be met are conditions such as the whales that are being hunted must be a non-endangered species of whale and that these whales must only be hunted in moderate portions. These conditions would basically make it hard for the species of whales in these two countries to become endangered and makes it possible for these two countries to be able to preserve their …show more content…
These claims should be balanced against world opinion by comparing whaling to some of the things that other countries such as the United States do. The United States should not be so concerned about Norwegian and Japanese people hunting whales and should not call it cruel when they have done much worse things with their animals in their factory farms. The amount of suffering that animals have to go through in American factory farms is much worse than the quick death that the whale has to experience when they are being hunted in Norway and Japan. The United Kingdom allows deer to be shot for commercial reasons and British slaughterhouses are allowed to exist but whaling is considered bad. A process where foxes are mauled by dogs called fox hunting is legal in places such as the United States and Ireland but whaling is considered bad. Comparisons like these should cause people around the world to wonder why whaling is considered bad by countries that allow their citizens to do much worse things to their animals. Not to mention that banning whaling in Norway and Japan would be much like banning agriculture in the United States. The banning of agriculture would hurt farmers in America just like the banning of whaling would hurt fishermen in Norway and Japan. Banning agriculture would hurt the culture and economy of America just like banning whaling would in Norway and Japan. So the best way to balance these claims against world opinion is to compare whaling to other

Canadian Seal Hunt The famous Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai once said “Environment and the economy are really both two sides of the same coin. If we cannot sustain our environment, we can not sustain ourselves” This has led me to the belief that the Canadian Seal hunt should not be banned because of the environmental benefits, economical benefits and the health benefits it provides that have been discovered through well developed research. Firstly, the seal hunt is balancing out the ecosystem. Research shows that seals in Newfoundland and Labrador are consuming 250, 000 MT of Turbot, 800, 000 MT of capelin and…

There are very few national debates within the country of Canada that are as prominent as the arguments surrounding the Atlantic seal hunt. The seal hunt is a traditional event that happens annually in the Atlantic provinces of Canada which takes place in the early spring of the year. This annual hunt provides a significant source of income to many of the residents in the Atlantic provinces (Sanger, 1998). The large debate surrounding the topic of the seal hunt is due to the fact that many people believe that the hunt is inhuman and should be stopped. The other side of this debate is that the hunt is not only humane but is also important to the Atlantic provinces and therefore should continue (Vaughan, 2009).…

The Seal Hunt Must be Discontinued The Federal Government of Canada should not allow the seal hunt to continue. To begin with, seals are killed in exceedingly cruel ways. Seal pups that are just over a month old are stabbed and killed with hooks and dragged across the ice to leave a trail of blood. According to a study in 2001, a team of veterinarians determined that in over 40 % of the cases they studied, the seals were most likely skinned alive.…

Whales Whales in captivity is a horrible thing because the whales are separated from their familie, are forced to perform in front of screaming audiences, and they can act out and hurt humans and each other in small spaces. Male orca whales have collapsed dorsal fins. When there in the wild there dorsal fin stays straight up. When there in captivity there dorsal fin collapses. This is most likely because they are cramped up in a tight place so they can’t swim freely.…

Many documentaries have made an impact in my life and taught me something valuable. Blackfish by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, The Cove by Louie Psihoyos, and Food Inc by Robert Kenner are four documentaries that have changed my outlook on life and caused me to rethink my assumptions about my life and how my actions impact on the world around me. Blackfish is about a killer whale named Tilikum and how his treatment at Sea World contributed to his mental issues that led him to attack human beings.…

Fishermen tend to claim that dolphins are a main factor in depleting the fish stock (similar to the American overkilling of wolves because of depletion of farm supply animals rather than relying on safer techniques, and have group hunts to take down pods of porpoises. According to the WDC, dolphin meat is often mislabelled as whale meat, which is often considered to be of much higher quality. Though dolphin meat is sold to hospitals and schools for consumption, it is shown to exceed the legal maximum amount of mercury at 0.4ppm, according to the WDC, and is therefore potentially toxic. It is not even small amounts of whales and dolphins killed in these provinces, either; according to the WDC, it is a staggering 80% of the marine creatures on the Japanese coast harvested so cruelly for meat and “pest control”.…

The world confuses whaling for sport in where whales are hunted as trophies on a massive scale, and whaling to sustain the livelihood of these small fishing villages. According to scientists, around 150-200 species of plant and animal go extinct every 24 hours. This statistic doesn’t seem so shocking until the realization comes that this is almost 1,000 times the natural rate for extinction. Humans contribute a great amount to this pandemic. A prime example is that of the dodo bird, which was famously hunted into extinction. Around 20,000 species are currently listed as threatened by extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).…
