For as long as there has been life there has been a constant pursuit to sustain that life. The basis necessities of life air, food and water. However for humans there has been a constant pursuit of one other thing. Whether it was something that was realized or not no one knows. As a race man has always been on a quest to satisfy his natural sweet tooth. A craving that was only satisfied at first by the hunting and scavenging of sweet berries and fruits. It would be this need to satisfied man’s sweet tooth that would lead to the cultivation and domestication of bees for there honey. For centuries this was mans only source of sugar aside from fruits and berries. Things however would change when the people of New Guinea would discover sugar …show more content…
I find that for something as simple as sugar it history is as extensive as the history of civilization itself. In its pursuit wars were fought, people were enslaved to make it, and at one point it was worths its weight in gold. It was so highly valued that new sources of it were discovered as well as the process to extract it. I would say that there are few food items that have as rich of a history as sugar. In fact it is safe to say sugar is responsible for the popularity of another delicacy known as chocolate. It is a disaccharide with a molecular structure made up of 12 atoms of carbon, 22 atoms of hydrogen, and 11 atoms of oxygen (C12H22O11). As stated before it is a compound of fructose (C6H12O6) and glucose (C6H12O6) both of which are monosaccharides. Its main use is for confections such as sweet pastries, cakes, and candies. In some cases it is even used as a preservative. It comes in many different forms that have just as many uses. It has a number of sources such as its more commonly known sugar cane and sugar beats to its lesser known sources of maple sap and milk. Sugar has played a huge role through out history.
