“We have a lot to gain through furthering stem cell research, but medical breakthroughs should be fundamentally about saving, not destroying, human life. Therefore, I support stem cell research that does not destroy the embryo” (Michael Steele). Stem cells are very beneficial for many reasons and can be used for transplants and testing new medications to help cure diseases and cancer. The negative aspect of stem cells is that embryos can be killed for further research. The research in stem cells still needs to be greatly improved, but as of now stem cells success rate is at a percentage of seventy to ninety percent in the U.S. Over a twelve-year period, there has been an approximate of 38,000 transplant patients.

Embryonic stem cells come from the inner cell mass of the embryo. Embryonic cells are pluripotent, which means they can become all cell types. This type of stem cells can grow very easily (what are the similarities and differences between embryonic and adult stem cells?). Adult stem cells are also referred to as somatic cells. They are multipotent, diploid body cells, which contains two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Adult stem cells are rare tissues and are less likely to initiate rejection after transplants. Adult stem cells are limited because of their tissues (what are the similarities and differences between embryonic and adult stem cells?). The three main current sources for embryonic stem cells are cell lines that already exist, spare embryos left over from fertility treatment, and custom-made embryos created by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) (sources of human embryonic stem cells). There are two most common current sources of adult stem cells. The first is to be used in bone marrow, which is very common. The statistics show that there is 1 out of 10 in every 15,000 that may need adult stem cells for bone marrow transplants. Controlling stem cells is definitely not easy (spinal cord injury zone). Although, embryonic stem cells are easier to grow into unspecialized cells scientists claim that there is still a lot of work needed into making the cells differentiation more reliable. Transplanted cells sometimes can "overgrow" and can lead to more issues some even as major as cancer (spinal cord injury zone). Also, the immune system can reject the transplanted cells.
