Over the past years the funding for stem cell research has been dismal. This new field of medicine can save life and can even be the cure to cancer that we all have been looking for. This relatively new field in science has been limited due to the fact that former President George Bush eliminated most funds for this field. He ordered that only select lines of these stem cells be used, however scientists inquired that these lines of stem cells were old making them unfitting for advancement. This restriction has made scientist take a step back in development for new cures, treatments and better diagnoses of diseases. How much longer will the people of the United States wait for this profound science to be used efficiently, effectively and ethically? This is a very important field for the betterment of not only the population of the United States, but the entire population of the world.
The current policy is designed to help the research process by granting funds to these laboratories that want/need this money to proceed with their research. This current policy, however, does not have the adequate amount of funds to properly equip these research laboratories with equipment, room, and all the resources needed for this new field of medicine. Blood cells and adult stem cells are stored in the bone marrow of most bones we have in our body, this is why patients who have blood deficiency disorders, or any disease where it affects the production of healthy blood cells we can use a family member’s bone marrow to help save their life. The first bone marrow transplant was conducted successfully in 1968 to help save a little boy’s life, and later lived a happy healthy adulthood.
