According to James Popham, standardized testing is to measure how well a student can perform in an educational setting and how successful a student is going to be (Popham, 1999, p. 8). How is this reliable in the grand scheme of things? There are students who are just bad test-takers, but are really smart and know their stuff. Then there are the students who do struggle in school, but get decent grades on the tests based on guessing. Standardized testing does not give an accurate representation of the academic knowledge of the student. Standardized testing started in the mid-1800s and became mandatory in all fifty states by 2002 because of the No Child Left Behind Act (Pro Con, 2014, p. 1). Teachers have a certain curriculum they have to go by while teaching the students. There are certain lessons on the curriculum the teachers have to teach because it will be on the standardized test. Teachers will then just teach the testing material thus leaving out the teaching of knowledge and skills the students need for outside of the classroom and adulthood (Bhattacharyya, 2013, p. 634). Instead of students learning life skills that are important to know for later on in life, they are learning basically useless information that they will most likely forget after taking the test. Going with this, the student may do really well on the test that was based on the curriculum the teacher taught, but may not do as well in adulthood because he/she was getting educated for the test, not for …show more content…
This test is used to measure your future academic success. It has three sections which are writing, reading comprehension and math. One test that you took one day is supposed to measure your future academic success. After you take the SAT, the scores are sent to the colleges you’re applying to and colleges take the SAT grade into consideration while they’re deciding if you should be accepted to go to that college or not.. Wayne Camara, vice president for development and Research at the College Board, stated, “The SAT is designed to measure cognitive abilities needed to succeed in college, but of course it doesn’t predict more subjective things like perseverance and good study habits necessary for succeeding in college”(Penn, 2008, p. 74) . Most colleges do not take this into consideration when looking at the SAT scores. Taking the SAT is a lot of pressure because you know you have to do well on it in order to get accepted into colleges and get scholarships. Because of this pressure, many students get anxiety and get answers wrong on the test even though they probably knew the answer. Yes, the test shows the cognitive skills that are needed, but the test doesn’t show how well a student performs in a classroom. It doesn’t emphasize the amount of life skills the student has in order to succeed in college. A student shouldn’t get denied from college because of one test. One test should not be
