Do human beings ever wonder how it was possible to open up Microsoft Word and start typing away for their essay, or opening Facebook and posting on their timeline that they are having a blast at the Cubs game. Well the brains behind all the creations that make our lives easier are Software Engineers. They are in charge of programming and coding every single website, programs and even computers. So how does someone become a Software Engineer and what does it take to be a successful one? Well it is just like any other degree or career, it all starts with schooling. While at school students have to earn certain certifications that get them ready to become a certified Engineer and that is what all employers look at before they consider anybody. …show more content…
To get these certifications or in specific terms programming languages, schooling is involved. Hundreds of 4 year colleges offer computer/software related degrees, even community colleges offer them to. Its just a matter of where students decide to go. To graduate with a Bachelor’s or a Masters degree in Software Engineering, three of the many programming languages will be required. C++, C#, and JAVA, these are the most common languages employers use, but there are more certifications students can be certified in to be better off in the career world. Such as SQL, Python, IOS, and Ruby/Rails. The more students are certified in the better they will stand out to employers, and of course the extra achievements will get students paid more. The starting salary for an entry level Software Engineer is $93,350, but if more certifications are achieved the starting salary could easily be over six figures. Employers love to see that some kind of experience has been achieved, related to the degree of course. It is going to be difficult to get hired by a big company without having some kind of experience prior to applying. The good thing is that there are many jobs out their that have some kind of software aspects and that will look good in resumes. Such as Geek Squad, they offer jobs that have to do with, tuning up computers and removing software and installing software. Staples and Office Max also offer related jobs to software. There is another route that could be taken and probably the best one to take, and that is applying for internships. There are thousands of internships related to software Engineering. For example, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple offer outstanding internships for students freshly out of college. People might think that it is very difficult to get an internship through these companies’ but is is fairly easy and they hire thousands of students a year. Their benefits are of the charts for example at Apple, interns enjoy an hourly wage of around $38 which allows them to earn $7,000 a month and they also get paid for overtime if they exceed more than 40 hours a week. They also pay for any airfare and housing that it is needed. So the experience opportunities are out their, it is just the matter how far do students want to go. And if students are lucky and work hard they can potentially get offered
