be generated when their personal profile is set up on a smartphone device. For those using the school-issued pedometer for tracking, the My Fitness Pal website is available for determining their personal goals. They will report their in-class beginning and ending step counts from their smartphone or pedometer to their student team leader each day. Each week student leaders will report their teams’ weekly goal on Monday, and each day they will report the steps completed by the students in their group. I will record the daily totals and post weekly the teams who reached their goals. Teams attaining their weekly goals will be encouraged to set higher goals, and other strategies will be discussed with all students to improve their level of …show more content…
The benefit to having results posted provides feedback to the team on the success of their efforts. Teams not reaching their goals would learn from others and begin to strategize on how to improve their results. The following study was reported using supportive curriculum with heart rate monitors (HRM) and pedometers (PED) and their effect on physical activity. The results proved quantitatively. Qualitatively, as well, the teacher felt the PEDs provided the students motivation for self-improvement during class. The students using the HRM shared that although time consuming to set up, it was good to be able to see how hard they were working (Chapman, Sullivan & Ciccomascolo, 2015) Set up time for the majority of my students would be minimal during the study as they own and carry their smartphones already. This supports a greater motivation to reach a higher level of physical activity with the use of the students’ own tracking devices.
The administration of the study by the team leaders collecting and retrieving the step counts or resolving technology issues will increase on-task behaviors though student self-management of their technology. As early as five years ago, Dickerson & Schrad (2010) shared this success from

The accessibility of the students’ personal devices and the ease at which they navigate through most applications excites the possibilities for their learning. When smartphones are present student engagement heightens and “small group” no longer has a stigma as the students now consider it “collaboration.” These are aspects of the real-world that education can embrace to best prepare students.
I plan to integrate this smartphone tracking technology into my eighth grade classroom. The benefit of having students who own, carry, and consider the smartphone to be their “lifeline” is a benefit as the device is present and their training is minimal. The role and purpose will change for the students and their smartphones--both will be engaged and productive components toward reaching their set goals. My goal is to not only help the students understand the benefits of tracking technology but also the process by which their combined efforts establish and reach goals.
The strategies identified expose students to tracking their in-class steps and recording their energy intake and expenditure for several days on their personal devices. Hopefully, using the

Then, I would help them to develop a step by step plan to achieve their fitness goals, with an emphasis on smaller, more easily achievable goals that they can check off on a daily basis. This emphasis on smaller task goals will foster an increased sense of motivation and help each client to track their progress daily in terms of their own “goal checklist”. I would use the task goal orientation to set goals so that each client can focus on being better than they were the previous session. This helps would help clients to track their progress, and allow them to see their own progression in comparison to their previous performances. If they believe that they are in competition with only themselves, then they will be less likely to compare their progress to others around them, thereby reducing feelings of dissatisfaction with their own personal fitness…

I wake up at 6 in the morning, walk by my kitchen refusing to eat breakfast at 6:10, and pack my duffle bag by 6:35. After brushing my teeth at 6:50, I leave for school at 7 with my brother and my father. Classes begin at 7:35am and end at 2:12pm. Standing in the locker room changing my clothes and lacing up my shoes by 2:25, I remind myself why I put myself through this ritual every single day. The gym doors open at 2:30, when dozens of student athletes crowd the athletic directors office waiting for him to appear with the key.…

“Assessment of Physical Activity Levels of 3rd and 4th Grade Children Using Pedometers during Physical Education Class” 1. This research study was also found on the ERIC database. After reading and analyzing two studies that discussed strategies on encouraging physical activity and/or education in the schools, the importance of who is teaching the class, and then also the support the school gets for physical activity, I found this study interesting since it dealt with the actual physical education class and what the children were actually getting out of the class. A school may have physical education classes but if the students are not benefitting from the thirty to forty-five minutes spent in the class, then it does them no good. I searched…

Everyday we the researchers go to either the control or intervention classrooms to either discuss college or do exercise. It seems that the students are really enjoying our activities. When running the intervention during these past few weeks the teachers were extremely helpful, as they would sometimes join us and encourage the children. Student engagement is an important concept in learning. It refers to attention and interest in what is being taught (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995). It increases academic achievement and active learning (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995), Students must be motivated to learn in order to be engaged. Without motivation, students will be disengaged meaning they will lack interest in the class and will not be motivated to complete tasks that are imperative for learning (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995). According to Taylor & Parsons (2011), high school students who are disengaged are more likely to drop out which makes it imperative that students at an early age are kept motivated to learn and interested in what they are learning.…

Laptops, tablets, and cell phones are essentials that many students own that are very common, however, these devices have the ability to make anything possible to the user. Sophia Harris states that “the society of today has become quite reliant on technology,” (Harris 2) in her famous article Pros and Cons of Using Technology in Your Classroom. In a way Harris is right, technology, especially cellular devices, are being used so much that students have grew so accustomed to them everywhere they go. Not every student learns and takes in information the same way, in correspondingly, one key impact technology has brought to the classroom is the wide range of independent learning for every student and their different learning…
