I believe sex education should be taught starting in the fifth grade in order to help prevent or reduce early sexual promiscuity and child sexual abuse, to avoid incidents of pregnancies and diseases, and to discourage intolerance of sexual minorities. All of these issues are associated with mental and physical health complications as well as socioeconomic complexities that are essential knowledge to achieve levels of civic effectiveness that this nation requires of its citizens. Therefore, I propose a sex education program that not only educates in the factual biological processes involved in sexual activity but also in the social, emotional, legal, financial and ethical issues surrounding the matter. As suggested in the introduction, I am aware of harsh treatment of people who are among America’s sexual minorities, including gay and transgender citizens, who have been the victims of cyberbullying, other forms of harassment, violence, homicide, discrimination, abuse and neglect that no human being should have to endure. In early childhood, some students might identify themselves as belonging to this protected class, having loved ones who are members or even being raised in a home headed by sexual minorities. These students might suffer from the actions just listed and develop emotional problems from feelings of worthlessness to suicide. The student wrongdoers against them may grow up to be terminated from employment for unjust dealings with a sexual minority or even incarcerated for committing hate crimes because all of their irrational fear, hate, bigotry, prejudice, intolerance, lack of compassion or other inapt attitude most likely stems from ignorance. To avoid damages to potential victims and perpetrators in these scenarios, I am in favor of including positive information about sexual minorities in a sex education class that stresses the importance of demonstrating at least tolerance, if not acceptance and respect. I am interested in developing fine upstanding responsible
