There is a big misconception that People with mental disorders are criminals when really it is the other way around. The population of inmates are increasing rapidly, which more prisons need to expand. If people were placed in the right location there would be no need of expansion of prisons. There has been a misconception that's prisons were built to hold individuals who are mentally ill. Former prison psychologist Fagan, states, “but prisons weren't built to deal with mentally Ill people, they are built to deal with criminal doing time”(1). Prisons were built solely for criminal and convicting people and people with mental disorders will only cause disruption within the system. People with mental disorders need to be put in rehabilitation centers in order to get the treatment needed. If they are sent to jail, they will only be seen as a number and will not get necessary treatment that is needed. People who are mentally ill are being incarcerated and criminalize because of the failure of community mental health care. For many, time spent behind bars will push them farther into a life of crime, but for others, the horrors of prison life and the lessons they learn there are enough to deter them from committing crimes again in the future. Rehabilitation centers are a solution to a huge problem because mental illness is a worldwide issue that needs detainment. This is mainly because the mental health of people are not acknowledged until they are out in prison or a crime had been committed. Out-of-prison rehabilitation and treatment for inmates who are mentally ill s more effective than imprisonment. It is more cost-effective, lowers recidivism rates, and helps get to the root of their problem. Treatment leads to fewer crimes being committed, which lowers the number of people incarcerated at any given time. Less money is spent on prison and jail, so more money can be used for treatment programs. Suffering from an illness is punishment enough; sending patients to jail is not the solution to the problem. It is important to consider all of the solutions in trying to reform the prison system because not only is rehabilitation an issue so is the increasing number of suicides that have taken place due to the lack of resources
