When something is lost, whether it is in a breakup, accident or even death, people feel numerous emotions and poetry allows people to express their emotions and be able to heal. Poetry is even proven to help certain mental illnesses, including depression. A report based off of 196 people with psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety, concluded that 75% of those people found that poetry was an emotional release for them. Out of those 75%, 7% were actually able to wean themselves off of antidepressants or tranquilizers just by using poetry. (Daily Mail) This just shows that poetry is able to assist people with any troubling emotions that they may be experiencing – anger, heartbreak, hopelessness, isolation, sadness, or even grief. Personally, I have found that poetry was even able to assist me in plenty of ways, especially when my dog, Theadora, was killed last year. Simply put, poetry provided me with the most comfort. Especially the poem Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep by Mary Elizabeth Frye. When the poem says “Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die” I was able to realize Theadora will always be with me. Poetry allowed me to remember her, and be able to say goodbye to one of the greatest dogs ever. It is not the type of communication that happens through texting or emailing either. Rather, poetry connects people on a more advanced level. It gives people a chance to associate with both others and themselves. Firstly, poetry enables people to connect with others in multiple ways. It gives people a chance to fall in love, make new friends, or just associate with humans that they may never see again. For instance, there are numerous stories online about how people fell in love because of poetry. Whether they met at a poetry slam, a poetry performance, or even a bar when one starts reciting poetry, it played a significant role in their encounter. Without poems, not everyone will be able to find their soul mate. But poetry is not just for finding love; it can also be used to associate with others that we might never have thought of accompanying. In New York, Madeline Schwartzman connects people on the New York subway by asking them to write poetry. Schwartzman strongly believes it is the kind of “elation to connect others.” (PBS) Schwartzman is one of many people that is trying to use poetry to make the world better. Furthermore, poetry allows people to connect with themselves, especially their emotions. Reading great poetry allows humans to find happiness, sadness, and other emotions within themselves. A lot of great poems have the gift of being able to evoke emotions.
