He was told by many doctors that he would never play football again (Borden, 2011). Mark was never the type to give up. Obviously his first and second priority was beating the cancer and football, but there was a thought in the back of his mind that he may not be able to form a career after college. He was scared that if he was not going to be able to play football again, he did not know what he was going to do with the career aspect of his life. Mark had gotten through college doing the bare minimum and getting by with the grades he needed to play football. Mark’s concern was that he would not be able to find a job after college and be living off of nothing. Paying college athletes would solve this issue immediately. Mark eventually overcame the cancer and is now playing for the New York Giants, but if he was never able to play again, and he was rewarded for the work he had put in the past years, he would have nothing to worry about. Stadiums get filled every Saturday and Sunday with millions of people, yet again none of the revenue goes to the people who the fans are coming to watch, the athletes. “The University of Texas generated over $100 million in revenue in 2011…” (Keolanui, 2014). They made all that money from the football games and from the fans and where does it all go? The NCAA makes about 1$ billion a year. College athletics as a whole pulls in bout 12$ billion annually. NCAA money comes from mostly TV and marketing and makes up less than 10% of all college athletics money. As the years have gone on, the NCAA is making more and more money by the billions. The money goes nowhere near the player’s pockets but towards other things like; student aid. Last time I checked the athletes weren’t playing for other students to go to school. Much of it also goes to recruiting, fundraising. All things that could be done using other expenses. Not to mention how much the coaches are making a year as well, Jim Harbough, the head coach of the Michigan football team makes over 9 million dollars a year (Berkowitx 2015). Yes, obviously the coaches are a big part of the process, but they would also be nothing without the players they are able to coach.
