Having spent more than half of my life as volunteer EMT and recently a caretaker for my Dad now my Mom along with working full time, there has never been enough time to relax and enjoy life. After years of listening to my Dad’s stories about how much he loved being on the lake fishing, canoeing, swimming and ice skating, this past October we visited his hometown in the Fingers Lakes and truly understood how he felt. U.S. Supreme Court: United States v. Riverside Bayview Homes Inc. 474 U.S. 121 (1985) The developer Riverside Bayview Homes was filling its property, which was located next to Lake St. Clair, Michigan, with fill material. The Army Corps of Engineers filled a lawsuit against the developer to prevent this from happening, as the Corps felt that this area qualified as a wetland and the developer would then need to obtain a permit from the Corps as required under Clean Water Act § 404. The district court held that this area was considered a wetland under the Corps’ definition. This was then reversed in the Court of Appeals, which stated that the Corps’ must avoid taking without just compensation which violates the Fifth Amendment, thus giving the developer the right to fill their property without a permit.…

Home Advantage is an insightful and compelling book as Annette Lareau considers the means in which parents are able or sometimes unable to shape their children’s educational experiences. Lareau draws on the theory of social capital first discussed by Pierre Bourdieu, to develop the argument that social class (independent of ability) does affect schooling. This is a comprehensible and enjoyable text as she challenges the current view that family socio-economic status is no longer important in determining successful academic achievements. Throughout the book she tries to answer; how and why social class influences parent involvement. Lareau uses a qualitative case study method to compare family-school relationships in a working class elementary…

Living on Beacon Hill, Boston’s pinnacle neighborhood that brims with history and wealth, is a dream that is out of reach to many individuals due to the astronomically high real estate prices in the area. However, even if one were to have an unlimited budget to buy whatever home in Beacon Hill they desired, the limitless possibilities would make it hard for an individual to decide. If I had an unlimited budget, I would choose 94 Pinckney Street as my residence on Beacon Hill. The evidence is probably sufficient to conclude the pool house is a dwelling because its use and structure support the theory that it is an extension of the living quarters. The State will likely be able to prove the Hernandezes’ pool house constitutes a dwelling because the facts support that its construction resembles that of the main dwelling and that it is frequently used for similar purposes as the living quarters, such as eating, sitting, watching television, and hosting friends. As defined in ILCS §5/19-3, “a person commits residential burglary when he knowingly enters or remains within the dwelling place of another, or any part thereof, with the intent to commit a felony.” For the purpose of this statute, dwelling is defined as “a house, apartment, mobile home, trailer, or other living quarters” in which a person “actually resides.”…

The ending of World War Two ignited a fresh start for the United States, the post war era ushered in changes in American culture, education, and economy. Although the post war era is known as a successful period in American history, the return of soldiers and soaring birth rates brought an intensive demand for affordable housing. In the year of 1945, the federal government implemented several reforms that would change the idea of what it meant to be a homeownership and the idea of what it meant to be an American. “Homeownership as the American dream shifted into an idea that it was the right to be a homeowner.” Housing programs such as the serviceman readjustment act of 1944 (G.I. Bill) and increase funding for the federal housing administration (FHA) ensured veterans, along with blue and white…

From a young age, I’ve always loved to cook. When I was little I would go to my grandma’s house and help her make bread and sarmale and at nine years old she gave me my first cookbook. However, as much as I love cooking, it could never come close to the love I feel when I am with my family and friends and the joy it brings me to make them smile and laugh. Through this class and really thinking about what is important to me, I have realized that my purpose is to make people feel loved and happy by using food and empathy to assess and react to any given situation. I plan on keeping with my purpose throughout my life by hopefully one day being able to have a family of my own and own my own home with land and animals to make great food and memories,…
