How Does Gmo Affect The Environment

In addition to the lawsuits from “seed saving” with compliant GM farmers, farmers with no association with Monsanto are also losing out. Many organic farms are losing billions of dollars because they are being contaminated by GM pollen and seeds, through no fault of their own. Each time an organic farm is contaminated; the farm loses their prestigious title and has to deal with Monsanto lawsuits, because of their patented seeds. Organic food is in very high demand right now; many people are on “health kicks” and want the best food they can get. This means organic farmers have to increase their production. If they increase the production, they have a higher chance of cross-contamination, and therefore have a higher chance of losing money and maybe even their business. (Sarich)

This gives the crop a better chance of doing well and producing a larger yield. Therefore, creating a more efficient use of the land and reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides. By genetically modifying the seeds, they claim it gives the crop a better taste and texture, which is obviously subjective. Lastly, it is said this is a sustainable way to feed the world, which I explained is not true previously.
For these reasons, I think GMOs should be banned. Although there are quite a few benefits to them, there are far more downfalls and they need to be recognized. If people keep ignoring the problem at hand, the big companies that produce GM products will get out of control. We may have no other choice than to eat genetically modified food in the future.
