The nurses also had a strong relationship to their managers enough to where they felt comfortable asking clarifying questions or even respectfully questioning/disagreeing with the way something was being done. The managers were very supportive and would often circulate the unit to offer assistance when nurses needed an extra hand. They also asked the nurses opinions about staffing and safety. The proposed bill will not only benefit healthcare in a positive way, but will greatly impact patients as well. First, patients will get the help they need, and will less likely be readmitted to an inpatient facility. As a result, the overall cost that a healthcare organization would have to pay for hospitalization would be decreased. Secondly, patients will receive further care by having an on-call case manager on standby if needed.…

One positive effect on advanced practice nurses if this bill were to pass is the increased opportunities for nurse practitioners to participate in women’s health care. One of S. 674’s goals is to provide more education for healthcare providers which would allow them to increase their level of knowledge and also to fully participate in women’s health services. Kisehn & Stedman state in their article (2010), “In countries such as the United States, Canada and the UK, the lack of availability of physicians trained and prepared to provide abortions is driving the increasing involvement of nurses, midwives and physician-assistants in abortion provision” (pp. 573). A negative effect on nurse practitioners if the bill were to pass is the legality…

Should the government require hospitals to meet specified staff to patient ratios, or allow the hospital to make decisions about staffing levels, even if it means fewer staff working longer hours? This is a question that affects millions of hospitals and also effects protocols in hospitals all over the world. I rarely visit the hospital, but if I go to the hospital and it’s a very serious case will I be treated quickly enough? Registered nurses have long recognized and continue to point out that staffing issues are an ongoing problem. It is a problem one that influences the safety of both the patient and the nurse.…

Excellent post this week! I agree that seeking ideas and opinions for "front-line" personnel is quintessential in maintaining financial costs. Furthermore, in today's healthcare arena nursing executives are now responsible in grasping the complexities of financial management (Muller & Karsten, 2012). Furthermore, the 2010 Institute of Medicine advocates that nursing staff should be involved in forming and directing healthcare resources ( as cited by Muller & Karsten, 2012). Additionally, as you mentioned, it is essential that nurse administrators utilize their "front-line" personnel as they can serve as tools in advocating for quality patient care (Finkler, Kovener, & Jones, 2013; Muller & Karsten, 2012).…

“Some things that will turn people away are sickness, burnout, shirft work, long shift hours” (“utah.gov”). Like the shift hours may turn people away because they have to work at night or on the holidays. Nurses also may have to work longer shifts for other staff members that can’t make it in that day. “For we who nurse, our nursing is something which, unless we are making progress every year, every month, every week, we are going back.…

The nursing shortage is a crisis that has been rumored for years. Unfortunately, there are many truths to this rumor and every nurse has been affected by this shortage at some point in their career. Just in recent decades, the economy had led to the nursing shortage. The nursing shortage needs nursing programs and hospital programs to augment and graduate competent registered nurses that can step into the registered nurse role. All nurses need to join and support the American Nurses Association and other nursing groups so that those groups can go in front of our Legislatures, and get Bills passed to mandate overtime so that nurses are not exhausted and can give competent patient care.…

To quantify the nursing role and apply value proposition in patient safety, there must be a substantial focus on nurse assignment and patient safety to avoid negative outcomes such as nosocomial infections, falls, pressure ulcers, and overall negative outcomes. The value-based payment method must incorporate the efficiency and effectiveness of nursing care linked to each patient similar to performance metrics for physicians (McGlynn et al., 2014). Nursing leaders need to recognize that a substantial contribution of nursing to positive patient outcomes, and must therefore establish metrics linking nursing to costs and quality, move focus from staffing to assignment and start billing for nursing services (Welton, 2010). In 1998, a nursing shortage began due to the confluence of several factors that were, at the time, unknown. The lack of nurses is becoming apparent and putting out negative effects for the world to see through the registered nurses habits in caring for these patients. Hospital administrators suggested higher wages and increased training for nurses; however, efforts to provide these did not end the shortage. The controversy here is higher wages cannot make up for being intensely overworked, causing severe exhaustion and job dissatisfaction…but some people are still trying to increase wages without reducing workload. Because many aspects of society are affected, the nursing shortage has become a concern among hospital administrators.…
