My Homeless Journey

Improved Essays
Throughout the day, I find myself going through the motions of life without thinking twice. I wake up, go to school, go to work or dance, do homework, then go to bed. In between activities, I spend a majority of my time on my phone or watching Netflix. I rarely, if ever, think twice about the privileges that I have been given because of the social class I was raised in. It was not until after I started volunteering to do service work that I realized how fortunate I was. Most of the people I volunteered for would love the opportunity to receive an education while, at the same time, participate in a sport or hobby that they were passionate about. These individuals would also love the chance to relax at home on a phone or watching Netflix. An …show more content…
During the summer of 2014, I had the opportunity to serve others in Birmingham, Alabama. One night of my trip was spent running a community meal for the homeless and less fortunate in that area. A meal was prepared by a group of volunteers, and it was my job to help serve the food and provide a friendly face for the visitors. Volunteers, including myself, were pulled into conversations with a few of the poverty stricken individuals. I learned about several of their families and home lives. One mother explained to me that she had sacrificed multiple aspects of her life, including her self-worth, to adequately raise her son, who had a learning disability. As the meal concluded, it dawned on me that compared to the others there, I have been fortunate with the items and opportunities my life has presented me. Thinking back on that experience, I am reminded to be grateful for every opportunity life has to offer …show more content…
I finally received a wake-up call when I was asked to organize a stock the cupboard and secret Santa event for my youth group. A Department of Human Services social worker knew of two families that did not have enough money to buy their children Christmas presents. One of the families was a grandma and an uncle raising a two-year-old boy. The boy was born with drugs in his system, so his first hours of life were spent going through a withdraw. As a result of drugs, both of his biological parents were in jail. Both the grandma and the uncle worked full-time jobs, so they would be able to afford basic necessities. After fundraising and gathering all of the food and Christmas gifts, the grandma invited me to their house to deliver the presents and judge their tree decorating contest. My first impression of their house was a worn out door, steps, and flooring. There were a lot of random trinkets inside, but the social worker informed me in advance that a majority of their possessions were from stores like Goodwill. In their living room, there was only an old box television set and a tiny couch. I gave my input on the tree decorating contest and left shortly after that. Weeks later, after Christmas, I received a picture of the little boy in the batman costume, on the scooter that was bought for him. He also had an ear to ear smile in the picture. His

I attend Abundant Rain Ministries in Coweta, Oklahoma; our church has a food bank called the Joseph House. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and the first and last Saturday of every month from 9am to 12pm, we give away food to those in need in the Coweta area. Working at the Joseph house has effected the way I see those around me, by analyzing my audience. Although not everyone is an open book, making it to where someone else can see exactly what is going on in their personal life. Being that not people, openly express how they’re feeling, or discussing the issues the face at hand with another person.…

    Salvation Army Angel Tree

For the most part growing up in a middle class family and in a fairly small town like Saginaw makes it easy to think that everyone else is just as financially stable as your family. This can lead to the mind set that really low income families live in a different city, state, or even a different country. Sometime it takes the holidays to realize that families who have trouble to provide necessities for living live right in your community, and can't financially afford to provide a dream Christmas for their children which provides hope through their struggles. The importance of understanding this and then applying action is highly encouraged through programs such as The Salvation Army's angel tree of which I've taken a part of, and applied to…

San Diego is known as America’s finest city and its citizens crowd the streets begging for help. I yearned to answer their pleas. My first act to help the homeless population was to feed them. I created food drives at my high school and as the Key Club president had the chapter feed the homeless every month. However, through feeding the homeless, I discovered an abundance of displaced young children and teenagers.…

More than 10,000 people are homeless in Atlanta on any given night, and I was given the opportunity to go and help them. A year and a half ago I went up, from my lovely suburban hometown in Orlando, Florida, to the urban hub of Atlanta, Georgia with my local church’s youth group to help out with the homeless epidemic. Being a veteran of mission trips, I was prepared to help out people who needed help and let the kindness of God move through me like a beacon of love, but I was never prepared for all of it to change the way I viewed life. Morals inculcated in me on that trip still affect my decisions to this day. Morals such as being selfless, having patience, and having empathy profoundly define me as a person because of this trip.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
