Under the ACA medicaid programs were expanded to reach a larger segment of the population. It is believed that this will increase overall care received by low income individuals, but as Heifi (2015) discussed., “The ongoing implementation of Medicaid expansions has the potential to improve health insurance coverage and access to care for low-income adults with behavioral health conditions” but the ultimate effect is yet to be seen.
Improved quality of life is much more than just access to health care As the video, Disparities in Access, Services, & Outcomes for Students in Need of School Mental Health Supports, showed healthy development and healthy behaviour is affected by quality housing, healthy foods, access to quality health insure, quality schools, transportation resources, clean environments, jobs, and adequate income. Many of these programs have been largely successful providing better homes, food, and education for the needy. Medicaid is one means to improve quality of care through access, but the reality is healthcare far exceed the realm of access and health care delivery. By focusing on these other areas we can also see improved health development and health behavior and thus improve overall health. May changes have been made, from the overhauling the old welfare program to the current SNAP program to better housing and education. Each one of these elements is critical to providing better health care. We have improved much but there is still work to be done. It is important for us to continue to evaluate these programs as to their effectiveness in reaching target population and improving them when necessary to promote the best healthcare
